Mr. G - Extended Pain EP on Bass Culture

A firm advocate of the deep sound that we witnessed on his recent 'Still Here' LP, Mr. G repeats the trick again here via two craftily produced original tracks, this time release on D'Julz's steady rising Bass Culture imprint. The deep, rolling, piano led number that is 'JB's' is first up, and its immediately apparent that Mr. G's penchant for analogue sounding techno and warm pads shows no sign of going anywhere. As was the case with much of the aforementioned LP, the track is spooky and emotive, though also slightly generic sounding on the ears.

'Sunday Blues' sees G following a deeper path still, this time manipulating an array of soft synths to create an atmospheric vibe. The trumpet line which interrupts around the half way mark also makes for an effective addition, while the "take my soul" vocal line ensures the heady, trippy tone.

We read his last LP was heavily influenced by G's experiences at seminal Berlin nightspot, Berghain. As the fat beats and hordes of percussion rub against one another on 'Sundae Blues', it comes as little of a surprise.

Wrapping up matters is Kasper's own interpretation of 'Sunday Blues'. The Madrid native, for whom G remixed last year, returns the favour with a manic, heaving remix that'll gain support with followers of industrial sounding Shed/Ben Klock-esque techno. As the pounding kick drum is layered over swathes of bass, it's immediately clear Kasper means business.

While Mr. G is experiencing something of a career rejuvenation right now, this EP (while decent) is still somewhat short of his best. For the most part, it simply sounds too familiar with his recent LP on Rekids. When G went out on a limb with 'Space - Bassed', he also produced the latterly mentioned LP's stand out moment. He's stuck to his guns on this release - yet I can't help feeling he'd have been better off sticking to a less rigid formula.
