The West Coast has produced many great electronic music artists over the years but has failed to produce the big event or conference that matches the diversity of voices spread over a vast region. Sure there's Burning Man, but that's not really a musical festival and certainly not a conference. With the recent canceling of this year's LoveEvolution in San Francisco, all eyes are now on the seventh installment of the Seattle-based Decibel Fest. Festival organizer Sean Horton has risen to the occasion this year with the most jam-packed line-up of talent to date finally giving the West Coast the world-class festival it has deserved for so long.
This year's Decibel Fest headliners include Flying Lotus, Modeselektor, Carl Craig and Fennesz - an indicator that this festival is rooted in diversity and a wide spectrum of expressions via electronic instruments and synthesizers. Although the festival has a host of other notable international talents including Scuba, Mount Kimbie, and Deepchild to name just three, hometown artists including Lusine, Pezzner, and the Lawnchair Generals are some of the featured attractions at the festival. Held in various venues around Seattle's youth oriented Capitol Hill neighborhood, this year's showcases include one from Ghostly International on opening day, Red Bull Music Academy and Planet Mu's showcases are the highlight of the Friday night festivities, and DB In The Park as well as the Mothership boat party around picturesque Puget Sound ensure that attendees will get a chance to enjoy the last fleeting moments of a legendary West Coast summer.
In addition to the music program, the festival also hosts three days of conference events starting on Wednesday the 22nd. Much of this deals with hands-on live workshops with tools such as Serato Scratch, Ableton, and Traktor but there will also be business discussions and informational round tables headed by notable figures such as Robert Henke and Shilo Urban that make Decibel Fest a must-stop destination for any serious North American electronic musician.
