Nic Fanciulli's career has embarked on a somewhat paradoxical path of late. On the one hand, Fanciulli - and indeed his label - seem preoccupied with an ailing genre in the form of tech house. On the other, he's now working with the likes of Stacey Pullen, which arguably hints at the regard he's now held in by the wider techno community.

Ironically, Pullen's own career trajectory draws slight parallels. In spite of his reputation as one of the most cherished figures in electronic music, he's better known for his mixes (Fabric, 2020, Dj Kicks) than he is for his skills behind the production desk - with actual releases infrequent and inconsistent to say the least.

Both are however, also capable of moments of magic, so initial reservations regarding this release were that it would be either A) very good, or B) very bad. As it transpires, ‘Limmo' nestles itself firmly between both camps.

Peppered with ghetto-esque vocals that hark throughout, the track - while not particularly unique - (the beat draws immediate parallels with Tiefschwarz's ‘Trust' for example), isn't grating on the ear either.

Its organic sounding synths and bundles of snares and white noise grant it a chunky, tribal, warehouse feel, yet also simultaneously enforce the view that Fanciulli is beginning to exhaust a genre he has become overly accustomed with of late.

Limmo's intention is to grant the listener "the keys to a musical limousine", yet the ride one embarks on here doubtlessly features a road already traveled. Big names, average results.
