In the Beginning there Was House - Inside Defected + Ibiza Line-ups 2011

Simon DunmoreDefected is one of the world's most respected dance imprints and perhaps the premier European house label. It would be quite understandable if boss Simon Dunmore had better things to do during his pre-season Ibiza holiday than talk to journalists. Yet he is pleasantly adamant about making time for an interview and meets I Voice on a blustery Easter Monday morning. He has to dash off in an hour to take his kids go-karting, but first he's happy to talk about the Defected ethos, the evolution of Ibiza and what drives his DJ career.

Defected is one of the island's most enduring nights - what are your thoughts as you approach the new season?
Time flies! There have been big changes, of course, and people will always say, 'It isn't what it used to be' but what's the point in that? You have to evolve.

What are your predictions for Ibiza this summer?
The Ushuaia Hotel is going to be a massive shot in the arm [to the scene]. It looks impressive, it holds 4,000 people - it's ambitious. It is going to bring amazing publicity, if nothing else.

Do you think Ibiza has finally overcome the 'Ibiza Uncovered' stereotype?
Mostly, yes, thanks to a lot of hard work. There will always be a little bit of that element, but people are more aware now of what a beautiful, tranquil place Ibiza is.

Do you think Ibiza has struck a good balance between partying and chilling?
To be honest, I don't understand the clampdown on outdoor music, beach parties. It's common all over the Mediterranean - you go to any resort and you'll hear music by the pool, and at the bars. Ibiza went too far [with the restrictions] which was down to a lot of club politics. The result is an imbalance between smaller, less expensive venues and the big clubs. You need a place where people can go and dance and have a good time without needing to take out a second mortgage. Defected is a continuation of what disco used to be - it's a little bit more mature, more sophisticated...

Pacha is at the luxury end of the club spectrum - what makes it the right place for Defected?
Our sound isn't hardcore. If you look at places like Studio 54, the Garage, they weren't full of kids, it was older people; creative, artistic people. We attract that crowd - people who want to cut loose and have a good time, but in a sophisticated setting.

Who are your key artists for the summer?
Defected is very much about promoting the label talent. We have Shapeshifters, Junior Jack & Kid Crème, Copyright, we also have Bob Sinclar, Dimitri From Paris, Frankie Knuckles and David Morales...

In the Beginning there Was House - Inside DefectedDespite all your other commitments, you still DJ - what motivates you to get behind the decks?
Past a certain age, it isn't the done thing to be at a club till 6AM but DJing keeps me on the edge! I don't want to get too comfortable, don't want to slip into middle age. Playing pushes me to listen to more music, it keeps me involved. Though I'll probably cut down over the coming years and focus more on other aspects, like artist management.

What do you look for when signing an artist to Defected?
Loyalty and commitment. Our artists aren't bound by strict contracts, but they don't tend to make records for other labels. We like to work closely with people. I believe if you do the right thing for artists it is a reciprocal relationship. We do more than just release a record, we put a lot of energy into promoting it, and supporting the artists. And one of the bonuses is they get to play at our nights - which means gigs at Pacha Ibiza, which is great for any DJ.

How as Defected changed as a record label?
When we started in 1999 it was purely a record label - all we did was put out music. Over the years we gradually moved into publishing, compilations, bookings, artist management. It's grown with the times. Now we employ 22 people. For dance people we're better than a major label - we're a special unit.

You've stayed very true to traditional house music - where does it fit in the current scene?
It's the most consistent genre in house music. Defected is a continuation of what disco used to be - it's a little bit more mature, more sophisticated. Clubbers probably start out listening to harder music, whether that's dubstep or grime or whatever, but as they get older they discover new music and look for something a little less frantic.

One of the big stories of the summer is Pete Tong returning to Pacha - what are your thoughts?
Really, Pete should never have left. He's a great ambassador for the scene, and he's going to bring an edge to Friday night. It's good that everyone was able to move on and that he's back.

If you could change one thing about the dance scene, what would it be?
At risk of repeating the obvious, I'd do something about file sharing. Because producers don't expect to get paid much for their records anymore they don't invest as much time, which has a knock-on effect on the quality of the music. The internet is the most amazing thing ever, but we need to make changes for the sake of the artists.
