Pure Pacha all gone Pete Tong - Line-ups

Pure Pacha all gone Pete Tong - Line-upsThe hype is there for sure "Pete Tong's return to Pacha with 'Pure Pacha all gone Pete Tong' is the biggest story of Ibiza 2011" says the PR announcement and this month's Pacha magazine loudly, but if rumours on the island around the story of Tong's move back to Pacha are to be believed it's not so much hype and more business sense relating to 'Wonderland' at Eden being not so wonderful after all.

The rugged faced 50 year old who is pictured on the front of this month's Pacha magazine with his second wife and a pair of piercing blue eyes that seem to say 'I know but I'm never telling and I'm back on their terms' is a shrewd business man who also has a touch of prioritizing what's right in life. As others grabbed and took whatever they could for the over-inflated wash-out that was the New Years Eve Millennium gigs, Tong is the DJ who reputedly missed his appearance for Cream in Brixton to be with his sick son and lost part of his full fee (though part of a reputed £125,000 is still a nice earner).

Personified as the 'nice guy' of dance music who was in the right place at the right time (Ibiza 1986) he went onto sell his record label FFRR for £12 million in 2003. Then there was the attack by DJ Magazine back in 2005 who called him an 'Old Codger' but the now 50 year old monolith of dance music doesn't appear to be moving towards retirement, moving from vilification to being coined as an 'elder statesman' of dance music.

His current fees are rumoured to stem from 12,000 euro at 'Rag Week' college gigs in a sheep covered corner of North West Ireland, which was rammed with 20 something students dancing, chanting and recording images of the icon as if they were listening to was the freshest DJ on the scene, to an undisclosed gross figure for a 6 month residency which begins on May 22nd at Wynn's hotel in Las Vegas. Yep, Tong has long since reached 'celebrity' status but in all this flurry of fees and glamour, part of me cannot help but wonder if Mr. Tong and all those other overpaid DJs are aware of the poverty line in the UK which sees 3.8 million children living on £13 per person per day.

Ah, but sure, let's forget about having a social conscience and all those little 'Oliver Twist' urchins and go back to focusing on the glamour, glitz and excess of Ibiza instead. This year also marks Tong's 20th year on BBC Radio One which Tong will celebrate with a private invite only party at Pacha's new restaurant 'Lio' and his return to Pacha ditches the wonderland brand to go 'pure'.

Live performances from Aloe Blacc and the UK's rising star Yasmin will be joined across the summer by artists including 2ManyDjs, Laurent Garnier (L.B.S), Booka Shade, Matthias Tanzmann, Paul Kalkbrenner, Guy Gerber, Calvin Harris, Fatboy Slim, Sasha,  Trentemoller, Felix Da Housecat, Laidback Luke, Gui Boratto, Derrick Carter, Stacey Pullen, Steve Lawler, Paul Oakenfold and Sander Kleinenberg who will be in residence for 4 dates. Perhaps, we're just at the beginning of yet another cycle of Pete Tong's everlasting career in the music industry.
