Monza Launch Season 2011 with New Home at Sankeys

Monza Launch Season 2011 with New Home at Sankey’s Originating from Frankfurt Patrik Dechent the man behind 'Monza' tells me 'We're ready for a new beginning with Sankey's'. The club night which ran into difficulty due to licence problems last year at Cova Santa temporarily moved to 'Come Together' at Space, but has found a more permanent base at Sankey's Playa D'en Bossa with its season opening due to take place on Thursday 23rd June.

On the history of the night Dechent tells me the name 'Monza' refers not just to the Formula One racetrack in Italy but also to the playboy image of 60's race car drivers "When we came up with the name in 1999 I was running the club with DJ T. my oldest friend in different locations in Frankfurt. Retro names were popular at the time like 'Robert Jonson' so we decided to use only images of 60's race car drivers and colours associated to this. Our artwork will never feature the face of a DJ. We stand for good music and good taste and are underground for this reason."

Monza's underground history on the island has entailed moving from venue to venue but Dechent is adamant they have finally found a home "Yes, Sankey's have taken this venue over for the next 4 or 5 years, our idea is to follow with this. What they are trying to develop is the first urban city club in Ibiza which fits our concept perfectly. In 1999, our beginning Monza was a really small nightclub atmosphere with capacity for 250 and I think the big floor concept is kind of gone on the island. "

Tell me about the new night which is starting on June 23rd the Sankey's posters are proclaiming a 'new era' how so?
The new era is for Sankey's is also a new era for us as last year we didn't really have a successful year in Space. It was an emergency placement of the night as we were meant to go to Cova Santa, an open air venue with a cave inside that was very beautiful in the mountains. We started earlier in the evening at 'Come Together' which didn't really work as Monza is more a night party then a daylight party. Well, Monza was always famous for trying to source new talent and sounds which were not related to headliners... The Sankey's parties are starting Thursday 23rd June and will have 15 events across the whole season with the highlight the grand closing with Ricardo Villalobos as always. I have a friendship with Ricardo since 1995, his first residency in Frankfurt was in 'The Box' a club I managed at the time and we have remained close friends since then.

You are going for residents/locals a lot in your line-up why so?
Well, Monza was always famous for trying to source new talent and sounds which were not related to headliners. Of course we try to support local talent this is why we have started the record label. Talent like Bruno Monteverde who is living in Ibiza but, originally from Uruguay, Manu L who is also living in Ibiza but is originally from Sardinia. Javier Gonzalez from Madrid the manager of the label and doing A&R with me, will be our resident and our Spanish support to do some good mainland parties, in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia.

Your new record label which is aligned to the club night, will the artists be working exclusively for it?
No, Monza is not a friend of these exclusive things. We try to give producers a platform and a hand but are open to we worked in the past like Marco Carola, Luciano, but now they do their own things. We're working with people like Dan Andrei from Romania, DJ Qu from and Jus -Ed from New York, Praslea from Romanian label A:rpia:r. Nima Gorji   has done our fourth release on the Monza label and I am also producing as Sunset people.

Can you tell me a bit more about the artists that you are bringing to play at the night during the summer?
We have Kabale und Liebe, Nicolas Lutz, Kiki & Ellen Allien from B-Pitch, Giancarlino from Goa Ultra Beat label, Alexandra from a:pia:rfrom Romania. Romania is really hot they are fresh talent. Binh is really nice talent from Berlin, Alexi Delano,  Masomenos from France who are a couple she DJs for 2 hrs and he plays live for 2 hrs. Okain from mainland Spain, Paul Ritch, Pagal is also a nice talent from Romania but is living on the island and produces on Nima Gorji's label. One of our biggest supporters who will play exclusively for us is Paco Osuna from Barcelona a good Spanish connection.

Is there a submission route for young producers who may want to submit content to the label for signing?
A label like this is a dynamic element and as soon as you start it's a question of time just before you find something fresh and unknown. Music is developing so fast and changing, producers can develop tracks in one hour and might hit the right sound. We are receiving tracks daily and always choosing and listening to tracks, looking for the new talent to find the real new unknown talent which is a bit like a lottery. To submit to us first of all the artist has to be really fascinated with the Monza family and they have to send the track to us or give it to us via hand.
