Cocoon Heroes with Loco Dice & Pan-pot - Amnesia 18/07 - Party review The bitchy mares on the island can say what they like but brand Cocoon is still doing something right on a Monday night. Outside, people move easily into the venue, the cool beautiful Germans (don't worry there are ugly/normal ones out too) out in force, all short ankle boots, minimal dark tee's, skinny drainpipe trousers, the odd black dress with feather epaulets adorning the shoulders (ala Brandon Flowers) and tonnes of sequins. Inside, street meets avant-garde freedom from the Brits and Spanish. Vampish girls with Hermes style silk scarves in their hair ala 1940s 'Rosie' style and scarlet red imprinted lips.

Androgynistic edgy people with tattoos and ½ shaved heads ala Alice Dellal, metro-sexual men who wear black sequin leggings, eccentric English guys wearing feathered Indian head-bands and half naked male torsos covered in sweat and making extreme facial gestures. The commonality is they are all here to dance as Desolat and Mobilee spill their sounds to the floor but what's the deal with clubbers being forced to pay €3 to check a camera in?

As people slowly navigate their way around there seems more smiles than aggression, uttering 'sorry', 'perdone' or blowing kisses after you, but the odd one or two do get hostile when you do try to talk or bump into them. However, In the middle of all the cool-ness a bunch of Italian guys on the steps are making monkey gestures and whooping loudly like a pack of clowns.  The floor has numerous empty water bottles not smashed glass on it like last gig attended in Amnesia. At least the "brand" has James Holden in this week and Plastikman next week let's see how that goes for them. A very cool woman from Frankfurt gives me her opinion on the floor "It's very packed but definitely got its own energy, there's no comparison to Cocoon in Frankfurt this is a way better vibe." One thing obvious about the crowd is they are not in any rush to get thrashed and binge it's a slow 7 hr burner built on different chemicals.

Pan-PotPan-Pot's first ever live performance of depth filled dark techno is industrious, rolling percussion and piercing melodies over driving bass that come in onslaught.

Tracks dropped from an 8 track 1 hour set include 'Confronted' and 'My Captain, My Captain' which Cari Golden's vocals drop very nicely over and the duo's remix of Slam's 'Lifetimes'.

Having contemplated whether to play their first ever live show after Vath requested and spending only 6-8 weeks rehearsing, the SAE trained sound engineers tell me "We're pretty nervous as we never played live before. We were never really ambitious enough and both see ourselves as a DJ team. That's our passion and we have a strict definition of what live is. We wanted to incorporate some instruments into this set so we're using Ableton live and a Roland SPD20 percussion pad"

Which the second half of the duo Thomas Benedix tells me he will actively trigger percussion samples with drum sticks through.

The booth set up also includes a nifty Native Instruments Maschine, 2 Apple I-Pads one of which a Korg Electribe runs through and S4 DJ controller for loops and samples. (More to come in another article soon... + Pan-Pot @ Amnesia, Monday 18th July photo here)

As clubbers move after Pan-Pot  to Loco Dice on the terrace it's a case of old-vs.-new when Vath came on dropping low slung grubby techno and piano laden timeless tracks. Whether that was down to Sven Vath pretending to be King Kong whilst throwing out toilet roll to the karate kids below (yes it was slightly humorous but also surreal and distracting as really dark cool melodic techno was spinning below) or the fact that commander Dice is just the man on the mark right now is questionable.

Followers are still present though as a 40 something guy declares to me "I am from Germany, I love Sven he is in my heart, look at the hair on my arms, it's standing up."

As the terrace rams another man of the moment Loco Dice delivers a long industrious soundtrack of blippy, bass and piano laden sounds which he plays for over 3 hrs. Long sets impacting. Dropping vocal loops into the mix of 'You got it, you got it, you got it, you got it' (ID?) gets reaction.

A 20 year old and his friend who is wiped from Manchester says 'I usually go to Warehouse Project, yeah, we're going between the two rooms I've heard of Sven Vath alright and it's good to hear some of the classics but Loco Dice is ace, kind of bank-rupting myself to come to Ibiza and most of my money has gone on drugs and drink but it's definitely worth it".

It seems all the DJs wants to be here too, Dubfire, Pete Tong, Nick Curly, Livio and Roby all hover nearby to the DJ booth around Dice or Vath. Why? Surely, the floor is as cool as the booth no? The sound is way better on the floor then in the booth. Thought DJs were meant to listen to their competition not schmooze.

Another clubber on the floor tells me 'Yeah been around a good few clubs now, this is definitely the first night I felt like I was at a rave in Ibiza.' There was a little bit of space down the back of the room but one girl tells me around 5am "I'm going home babe it's too full". Whatever the case Techno it seems is ruling Ibiza right now with Monday and Tuesday nights back to back with Cocoon and Cox.

And with a little bit of the right programming it appears even after 10 years Cocoon still have a little magic to deliver as party promoters.

Musically the night was owned by Desolat and Mobilee and hopefully more decent label showcases which bring the right crowd and right sound will be firmly placed on promoter's minds. The real question now also is whether the rumours about Dice moving to Pacha next year will materialise
