It’s not often that a track and its remixes give me that (cliché as it may sound) journey feeling. The sense that the original has really been listened to and taken into consideration by its remixer’s rather than just torn apart and pieced back together again.

With murmur’s latest release “If I” though, that’s precisely what I get - the three “If I” mixes transcending me through different spaces and moods whilst keeping me on the same path. Newcomer Hamid’s original establishes the tone with a stripped back trail of percussion, a slinky b-line and the encapsulating vocal hook from jazz singer Valentina. Utilising the often overlooked beauty of the space between the beats, every simmering bubble is granted its eventual burst, every rat-a-tat drum its ricochet and every clap-crawl it’s prowl.

Take me to the dance floor though and its Jay Shepheards remix that blows my mind. Removing the intricacy of the percussion and encasing the ‘at home listening’ original with a layer of humid, sweaty reverb and a dirty reworked bass, “If I” morphs effortlessly into its late night alter ego.

Inxec and Droog’s Andrei Osyka provide yet another belter and similarly to Shepheard the bass line is fattened and re-arranged for that big room sound. But this time there are more chords, multiple synths and dramatically layered strings that create an almost cinematic climax for the trio which in turn makes for a melancholic comedown. Jay Shepheard, Inxec and Andrei’s years of experience take what was a promising but slightly introverted beginning through to its full potential.
