"All's (not) quiet on New Year's Day" - NYD 2012 Our Picks

NYDIs New Year's Eve the globe's most criminally overhyped, overrated and overpriced night? A combination of relentless taxi queues, heaving capacity bars/clubs and well, 'Auld Lang Syne' certainly don't help matters, and with this much in mind, I Voice decided it best we focus our attention elsewhere this year.

Predictably, that attention is now firmly fixed on the day after the night before. New Year's Day has garnered an increased relevance in the clubbing calendar of late, a fact emphasised by the global array of talent that spans from Australia to Amsterdam to London.

Suffice to say, we scanned the earth for the best that the day has to offer, and here's our pick in chronological order:

Sydney, AustraliaSydney, Australia - Space Ibiza pres. Kehakuma NYD Sydney @ Greenwood Hotel
Kehakuma provided one of Ibiza's most talked about nights this past season, with a combination of clued-in crowds and underground DJ's going down a treat in the infamous Playa d'En Bossa nightspot. With big guns such as RadioSlave and Seth Troxler pencilled for their Australian fling alongside rising stars a la Garry Todd and Chasing Shadows, Kehakuma's dedication to fostering new talent is a refreshing one. With underground options often limited due (primarily) to geographical constraints, Down Under's techno and house fraternity will miss this one at their peril.

Line-up: RadioSlave, Seth Troxler, Eddie Richards, Jef K, Remo, Garry Todd, B-Complex, Chasing Shadows

Amsterdam, NLAmsterdam, NL - Awakenings Amsterdam at Gashouder
Ah, the mighty Awakenings. When it comes to techno, do these guys do anything in half measures? If the line-up for their bash at The Gashouder is anything to go by, the answer evidently,  is that they do not. With Dutch techno royalty such as Melon and Egbert cosying up alongside, well, techno royalty in the shape of Len Faki, Adam Beyer and Ben Sims, Awakening's patrons can expect fireworks in two senses of the word – just ask Pan-Pot, one of many Awakenings » regulars set for a return here.

Line-up: Melon, Karotte, Pan-Pot, Egbert (live), Len Faki, Adam Beyer, Ben Sims

Amsterdam, NLAmsterdam, NL - Trouwens at Trouw
Since its success at the just-past ADE, Trouw continues to be name-checked amongst industry heads and clubbers alike as Amsterdam's most happening contemporary club. The reasons we're led to believe, are part attributable to the musical charms of Patrice Bäumel and Nuno dos Santos, residents who will once again reside here alongside a slew of others including Tom Trago, Boris Werner and William Kouam Djoko. If it's Dutch talent you're intent on catching, one of the lowlands most notorious clubbing backdrops should provide an apt setting.

Line-up: Surprise Guest, Je Dàvu, Tom Trago, San Proper, Patrice Bäumel, Nuno dos Santos, Sandrien, Boris Werner, William Kouam Djoko, Job Jobse, Jan van Kampen, Makam, TRFD aka Tom Ruijg & Efdé, Carlos Valdes, Aron Friedman, Eric de Man, Tim Hoeben

Barcelona, ESBarcelona, ES - Secretsundaze Nyd Marathon Bcn @ Factory Club
To many, clubbing in Barcelona equals little more than the annual Sonar bash. That though, is doing the Catalan capital a great disservice, what with its many clubs and off-kilter venues oft-providing a clubbing environment few other places on earth can match. Like Berlin and London, the city reverberates to a 4/4 beat, and just like its football team, the electronic music scene carries itself with an impressive flair and grace too. With this in mind, London's Secretsundaze make for the perfect fit, decamping on BCN's Factory Club complete with residents Giles Smith and James Priestly, with house music legend Chez Damier also in town.

Line-up: Chez Damier, Giles Smith, James Priestley, Paul Loraine, Mirus, Andre Buljat, Danny Ocean

Barcelona, ESMadrid, ES - Space Of Sound Festival  @ Madrid Caja Mágica
Whether it's football, politics or culture, the city's of Madrid and Barcelona rarely see eye-to-eye. So while Barcelona revels in its strictly underground NYD line-ups, what do Madrid do? Just like 'The Galatico's', Space of Sound's curators go ahead and secure the biggest names in the business for their party. And we mean big. Heck, even if the likes of Sven Vath, Carl Craig, Ricardo Villalobos and Dubfire don't point you in the direction of the dance floor, the likes of Paul Ritch, Matthias Tanzmann, Davide Squillace and – most excitingly – James Holden, surely will. A line-up of gargantuan proportions, the only downside here is likely to lie in its inevitable time clashes.

Line-up: Sven Vath, Adam Beyer, Carl Craig, Cassy, Chris Liebing, Ricardo Villalobos, David Squillace, Dubfire, James Holden, Matthias Tanzmann, Tale Of Us, Armin van Buuren, Henry Saiz, Paul Ritch, Umek, Zombie Kids, Zombie Nation, Ramset, Miguel Mendoza

Barcelona, ESMadrid, ES - Day One Festival
What's with Madrid and New Year's Day parties? For 51 weeks of the year they play second fiddle to Barcelona, barely registering on the global – or indeed, European – clubbing map, and now this, a rival (in the same city no less) as Space of Sound. The Spaniards odd preoccupation with all things Minus related is appeased here courtesy of Mr. Hawtin himself with Gaiser, Barem and  Ambivalent. Elsewhere, Loco Dice and Marco Carola go back-to-back  to offer up some proper techno goodness.

Line-up: Richie Hawtin , Gaiser Live,  Barem Live, Ambivalent, GutiLoco Dice & Carola B2B Set (4 hours set), Luciano, Reboot  B2B Robert Dietz Ft "No Hit Wonder", Oscar Mulero, Tini, Uner, Vitalic

London, UKLondon, UK - Hot Natured New Years Day Party - East London
When you're as popular as the Hot Natured crew, you tend to slowly gather detractors. Yet Jamie Jones and co. have become a potent force in the underground for one reason and one reason only – quality. In fact, few other producers have got the ladies as hot and bothered on the dance floor as the likes of Jones, Lee Foss, Art Department, Maceo Plex and Miguel Campbell of late, all of whom will be making an appearance here, either individually or collectively. Hot Natured by name and Hot Natured by, well, nature, the as-yet-announced venue should make for an unpretentious, fun fuelled atmosphere with which to toast in 2012.

Hot Natured feat Ali Love, Art Department (Live), Maceo Plex, Miguel Campbell, Richy Ahmed, Robert James, Dave Harvey

London, UKLondon, UK - Circo Loco New Years Day @ Proud2
To many, there's no Ibiza without Circo Loco: just ask the hordes who stayed off the island in 2008 in protest. There are also fewer destinations where DC10's iconic brand is as revered as it is in the UK. They'll be bringing their crazy clown symboled shindig to Proud2 on NYD with a most tastily assembled line-up that includes Visionquest stars Ryan Crosson and Shaun Reeves, native Londoner Clive Henry and the ever dependable talents of Tania Vulcano and System of Survival. Quite how Squillace and Tanzmann will get from Madrid to London though, is anyone's guess. While East London is about as far away from the sun-kissed planes of Ibiza that I care to imagine, a terrific night of music is certainly in store here.

Line-up: Tania Vulcano, Matthias Tanzmann, Davide Squillace, Lee Curtiss, Dyed Soundorom, Ryan Crosson, Shaun Reeves, Clive Henry, System Of Survival

London, UKLondon, UK - Fuse New Year's Day Rave at 93 Feet East
Having just celebrated their 150th Sunday day-time party at their Brick Lane home, Enzo Siragusa and co. have built up a loyal following in the capital. Their formula for success is a simple one, and typically  revolves around one international and residents such as Alex Arnout, Seb Zito and Rich NxT not to mention the aforementioned Siragusa. The latter crew will all be joining in the festivities on New Years Day alongside sometime Cocoon man - and Turkey's most influential house music export - Onur Özer. Few promoters know quite how to run a day time party like Fuse, and expect this one to pass with consummate ease and good vibes aplenty.

Line-up: Onur Özer, Dan Andrei, Enzo Siragusa, Alex Arnout, Rich NxT, Seb Zito

Birmingham, UKBirmingham, UK - Below New Years Day @ Rainbow Pub
While it's London and Manchester that continue to draw the majority of the UK's house music plaudits, clubbers in Birmingham would doubtless have a thing or two to say on the subject. Just ask the promoters behind The Rainbow Pub, Below. A venue that's fast gaining increased relevance and hype with each passing week, it's little wonder they are too, as consistently underground and shrewdly assembled line-ups seem to have become the norm in the midlands. NYD is no different too, as locals Subb-an and Adam Shelton spin alongside the French trio of Seuil, Shonky and Bloody Mary. Brum's techno revival harks on with aplomb.

Line-up: Seuil, Shonky, Bloody Mary, Subb-an, Adam Shelton, Tom Craven, Frenchy, Tristan da Cunha, Seelie, Lewis Oxley
