Dig deep people; Jay Haze returns with Toys & Needs 2011

Jay Haze is a DJ cut from a different cloth. For over ten years, not only has he been honing his own productions, and nurturing his record labels Tuning Spork and Contexterrior, but he continues to actively give back to less privileged communities around the world through a series of social projects.

Jay has visited places like Villa El Salvador in Peru where he’s helped connect people and bring villages much needed supplies as well as Christmas gifts. In 2010, after returning from volunteering in a slum in Latin America, Jay formalised these social efforts by starting up Toys & Needs, an endeavour he created with the help of his manager Isis Salvaterra.

Toys & Needs’ mission is simple: to continually support those in need. One year later, Toys & Needs is officially an annual event - and 2011’s round is just about to kick off.

The initial fundraiser was very much a spontaneous decision, made only two weeks before Christmas and borne off the back of Jay’s help in the slums. This year, Jay and Isis have been working tirelessly to better organise the follow-up event.

They have rallied round the music industry, their friends and family, and are now looking for you, too, to get involved. If you’d like to, it really couldn’t be easier – all you need to do is get in touch with Isis and take it from there.

You can donate your artist fee if you’re a DJ, run a jumble or bake sale, a fundraising club night, or even just donate a tenner from your own pocket - as Isis says herself, “Donating as little as £10 alone can help enormously.” As before, all money raised and all gifts donated will be given out to the underprivileged one week before Christmas. Item’s collected from this year’s drive will be given directly to Villa El Salvador, a slum in Peru where half a million people call home, and where Jay is currently volunteering.

If you’re not compelled enough by now to get out your wallet and dig deep, we highly recommend taking a glance or two at the heartfelt videos of Jay’s efforts on YouTube that will have you clambering for ways to help. The bottom line is that there are people out there living in some of the worst conditions imaginable and as much as it’s a cliché, every penny helps. Take a moment to look around you and acknowledge the comfort you are most likely surrounded by. The next step? Share the wealth, just like Jay and Isis.
