The clothes you’ll be clubbing in this autumn

The warm weather has finally descended upon London which means, of course, that the shops are full of clothes for autumn and winter – what else? Seeing as the bikinis and board shorts have long gone on sale, smart fashionistas – guys and girls – are wisely using the heat wave to plan their new season purchases. Get ahead of the game too with our guide on what to buy and where to get it.

The Macaulay Jacket
Who’d have thought the anorak would ever earn fashion points? Designers, independent boutiques, and high street stores have all taken style cues from none other than Home Alone’s Macaulay Culkin. The result? A love affair with the anorak. It’s light to wear, often oilcloth to resist rain, and it’s the proprietor of an extensive amount of pockets – so it’s easy to see why fashion’s finest love it.

Pick up yours from an array of colours available everywhere from Japanese mountaineering specialists MT Rainer, to Number Six - the Brick Lane store that stocks Heritage Research styles (that come complete with rucksack-inspired shoulder straps for ease of carrying). Prefer the high street? Nip down to Levis or Topman and you’re sorted.

Japanese Raw Denim
Much to the underground denim devotee’s dislike, the twice-turned, inky jeans are no longer reserved solely for the fanatic. Raw denim’s popularity is on the rise, and investing in a well-made pair from somewhere like London boutique Albam could not be a better way to spend your money.

What is it that makes them so special? They’re cut from untreated denim and use the natural edge of the fabric as an integral part of their design (usually down the inseam). This is called the ‘selvedge’.

Tip: don’t wash them – wear them, then wear them again. The beauty of Japanese denim is its untreated indigo hue and how each pair ages naturally.

The Skull-Cap Beanie
It’s no secret that the 90s are back - a stroll through the high street will prove the fact in a second – so the return of the beanie hat was only a matter of time. The good news is that after the saggy, sloppy style has ruled supreme for season after season, a more fitted design is tipped to be autumn’s big buy. Get ahead of the rest with one that’s tight fitting, colourful, and cable knit like those at Topman.

The Limited Edition Shoes
Converse are indisputably the footwear of champions so when we heard that Jamie Hewlett - co-creator of the virtual band Gorillaz and prolific comic book artist - had designed a capsule collection of hi-tops, we knew they’d be hot property. The collection compromise of ten styles and it’s the monochrome sketch design that we bet will be a winner. Get yours at on the Converse website before they’re gone.

The Sexy Sweater
Yes, really. ‘Sexy Sweaters’ is a tumblr blog that posts basic jumpers with all manner of crazy full-scale prints on them. Their design process is simple – you write on the blog with a design suggestion, they print it, and then sell it. Genius.

The design we’re whole-heartedly behind is the Damien Hirst-inspired sparkling skull. Thankfully, unlike Hirst’s ‘For the Love of God’ masterpiece, the sweater will set you back a pocket-friendly $50 as opposed to £50,000,000. Sold.

The Tech Must-Have
When it comes to music, we don’t mess about here at I Voice – it’s all about optimum sound. Safari Electronique’s head honcho Arnaud Le Texier agrees, and recommends a pair of superior headphones: “I’ve used Sennheiser HD25 headphones since 1998 or something. I’ve never changed anything on them. I have to say they’re a pretty quality choice.

The Does-it-all Sweatshirt
Be it Mulberry’s quilted design, American Apparel’s slouchy number, or a vintage find, the humble (at first glance, rather boring) grey sweatshirt has super-styling powers that manifest themselves in the ability to “bring it down” (as coined by the fashion pack). Roughly translated, this means that this sweater’s secret weapon is its ability to instantly balance an eye-popping printed skirt and autumn’s plethora of jacquard and brocade trousers, which leads us nicely into the next new season staple…

The Ornate Trouser
The trouser has officially returned and for autumn, it’s all about opulent, embellished, and tailored styles. Designers Stella McCartney, Elizabeth & James, and Roberto Cavalli have all heralded these ankle-grazing strides as the new a.m. to p.m. must-have. Choose a pair that’s cigarette in silhouette, and tumbling with texture like Topshop’s golden brocade or paisley styles and pair them with the grey sweatshirt for day and a luxe tee for night.

The Khaki Jacket
Many people make the mistake of overlooking their outerwear, and similarly to the grey sweatshirt, what makes a good army-inspired jacket essential is its versatility. What that means is that if you don’t own one already, prepare for your wardrobe to be enlightened.

French designer Isabel Marant has showcased a beautifully-disheveled army layer for autumn, Givenchy, the nipped in military shape, and Ragged Priest have reinvented the camouflage option with bullet-like studding detailing.

Tip: invest in two (perhaps one plain, one patterned) and rotate – you’ll be surprised how hard it is to get this baby off your back.

The Bekett and Bazil Boots
The Bekett and Bazil boots are the superior choice when it comes to hi-tops – and it’s Miss Marant that’s responsible for these puffy nineties-inspired boots (not unlike the early nineties Reebok Pumps). Not only are they chic, they’re also comfortable enough to accompany round-the-clock clubbing, too. Make sure you let the tongue hang out loud and proud for extra style points.

The Lace Dress
The lace dress reveals many split personalities this coming season; from new goth at Alexander McQueen, to sophisticate at Lavin. At Lover, Whistles, and ASOS however, it’s all about bold femininity with vibrant colours and skater-skirted styles. We recommend opting for a statement neon hue such as Topshop’s structured eye-popping style – pair it with your Bekett or Bazil boots for laid-back East-End cool.

The Dual Purpose Clutch
By day, it’s the most stylish way to stash your iPad, and by night, this grab-and-go accessory is perfect for holding all of your clubbing essentials. Choose one in a searing hot hue like Comme Des Garçons lime leather style or bag two trends in one with Smythson’s moc croc version in one of autumn’s biggest shades – purple.
