DJ Vazik - An interview with one of Mexico’s top dance music artistsArtist, DJ, and Sounds of Earth label owner Vazik is considered one of the top DJs in his home country of Mexico. He gigs non-stop and his label has put out 55 releases in the past five years, the guy is relentless.

His latest compilation – Moving Forward 4 – has been on of his label’s biggest to date representing not only his favorite Mexican artists but also international connections that he’s met gigging around the world.

We had a chance to catch up with this tireless dynamo to get a little insight into Vazik’s music, his label, and his plans to spread the sounds of Mexico even further around the world in 2013.

You have a new compilation out on your label Sounds of Earth. When was the label founded and who some of your biggest artists on the label currently?
Yes, my latest compilation Moving Forward 4 is out now, it is definitely one of our strongest releases so far. 18 beautiful tracks packed in a double CD combo.

I started the label on 2007; and we are now approaching our 55th release. We have signed tracks from really cool artists like Matador, Florian Meindl, Perfect Stranger, SQL, Logiztik Sounds, Duca, Juan Deminicis, and some great Mexican artists too.

Where are some of your favorite places to play and who are some of your favorite Mexican artists?
I’ve played in twelve different countries so far, and every country has its own energy. I’ve been in huge festivals like Boom (Portugal) or Fusion (Germany) and also in many clubs and smaller open-air events all around the globe. Definitely Sao Paulo, Berlin and Paris are great places to play, awesome crowds and lots of fun.

Regarding the Mexican talent I’m a big fan of artists like Tini Tun, Signal Deluxe, Caballero, Jabba, Mild Bang, Balcazar & Sordo, etc. There is much talent in Mexico and it is about time to check the music that is produced over here.

Moving Forward 4Are there any plans to tour in support of the new compilation?
We started with a great release party in Mexico City, where all the public got the double CD with the entrance; we packed the place and had a great night. We printed double CDs with a beautiful art and they are nearly sold out now.

I normally tour a lot and been playing many of the music of my latest compilation, the deeper tracks work very good on clubs and after hours, and I’ve tried many of the techno tunes in open air events also. We had done some good promotion in several media over here. I’m really happy with the feedback we have gotten so far, the list of the DJs supporting it is amazing.

These aren’t just Mexican artists on Moving Forward 4, who are some of the international artists on the compilation and how did they end up with a track on it?
For this compilation we have tracks from Florian Meindl, Logiztik Sounds, Rodskeez, Juan Deminicis, Rodrigo Carreira & Malcon Costa, Tom Hill, Ultimate Breakers and many more. Eleven different countries are together in this project. I have a good relation with all of them, have worked in some bookings in Mexico with some and they had released some music with us before.

Tell us a little bit about your involvement in the Catalogo MX project; is there a close knit underground dance music community in Mexico?
Catalogo MX is a great project, it is commanded by our good friends Signal Deluxe. They united more than 30 Mexican labels and got them together in this mission. The underground dance music community is not as close as I think it should be, but this is definitely a very good way to start changing that and should become and example for the rest of the community.

DJ Vazik - An interview with one of Mexico’s top dance music artistsYou were named Mexico’s top DJ in 2011-2012, tell us a little bit about that.
Last year I was awarded by DJ World Awards in Mexico, and I recently got the award as Best Techno / Tech House year by the same organization, we also got the award as “Best Mexican Label” on the same night. I’ve been playing for more than 15 years and I’m really happy with the results, it feels good when all the work and talent is recognized.

What else can we expect from you before the year ends?
I’ve a very busy schedule for the rest of the year; I normally play 2-3 times a week. I have been playing in some of the biggest festivals in Mexico and I’m closing the year with some great gigs like Time & Space Festival in Mexico City and Riviera Maya, I’m really looking forward on those last gigs of the year. This year I had a good small tour in Europe in the summer and I’m coming back next year to do –at least- a two month Tour. In Mexico I have reached a very good status and I have accomplished many of my goals. Right now I have some very good tracks and in the oven, I feel is a good time to promote myself a bit more internationally.
