Ignoring the unstoppable trance titans, the Dutch scene seems to have been on a steady upward curve in recent years. With long time electronic stalwarts like Clone, Delsin and Rush Hour growing ever more influential (and popular) around the world, myriad other labels from 100% Pure to Area Remote all help bolster the country’s reputation for great underground music.
The capital city doesn’t suffer for club spaces, either, with the esteemed likes of Trouw, Melkweg, Studio 80 and many more all packed out on a regular basis. As well as those places, there is also AIR… the club party responsible for a new winter festival held on 22nd December.
“The idea to organize a big indoor festival in winter began by AIR and was founded, together and in cooperation with, the influential promoters and brands of Amsterdam” says Tom van Wijk from the festival. “Holland has, I think, the most festivals per square meter anywhere in the world during summer, but doesn't really have electronic music winter festivals.
We also organize multiple festivals in summer in Amsterdam, so we thought why not continue this in winter? We hope we can unite Amsterdam party people on this date and bring the festival vibe which crowds like so much in summer.
December is the perfect month for that, because it's the month where people looking into warm events. We don't see Valhalla as a big indoor night rave, but as an outdoor festival feeling in an indoor location. We call it an electronic music parade.”
Said electronic parade is set to play out at Amsterdam RAI, and as well as plenty of music will offer a multi colored display of disciplines, organizations, artists and performers. Big name brands include Dekmantel - the label that has released killer full lengths from JuJu & Jordash and Vedomir this year - GirlsLoveDJs – a popular Amsterdam party – as well as nights like Colors and Format and local DJ/producers done good like Gerd and Tom Trago.
“Amsterdam promoters that already do events in the city hosts each stage” says Tom. “Every promoter or brand has his own character and sound. With think the combination of these brands is a good reflection of what Amsterdam nightlife has to offer the electronic music currently. It's difficult to talk in musical genres nowadays, but we think we offer a really wide range in electronic music. From Ben Sims to Gesaffelstein, Kissy Sell Out to Cosmin TRG, Maxxi Soundsystem to John Talabot, Agoria to Mosca to Matthias Tanzmann and many more”
The ticket prices for this event have been consciously kept low, starting at just under 30 Euros for what will be a full day and night of entertainment. Given that the impending dope smoking laws have once again been crushed, there was never a better time than now to go and explore the picturesque city and its many musical offerings.
