Originally from Venezuela but now calling Sao Paulo home, techno artist Greencross has dropped some solid big room techno releases for a variety of cool labels over the years. The Children of the Python EP marks the first time Greencross has released anything on his own Different Is Different imprint.
The two track single – one original and a smoldering remix from Johannes Heil – is a real winner of a label debut and a nice departure from the rough and tumble bangers that this label is most noted for.
The original version of “The Children of the Python” provides a crystal clear musical window into the South American summer – sultry, steamy, always verging on high-heat related chaos. This is musically, however, Greencross at his most restrained, working in a melodic tech-house vein that still sounds dangerous.
One reason is that he never gives into the kind of softness threatening to topple the genre right now. If only more artists followed this lead maybe things wouldn’t be so problematic. For now, more artists should be listening to this track for inspiration and taking notes.
Techno legend Johannes Heil provides the techno injection that fans of this label will be looking for when previewing it. The driving percussion and open hi-hats are dramatic and the musical phrasing allows for dynamic pauses that don’t kill the momentum.
Best of all is the simple, pulsing melody that doesn’t seem like much but is in actuality a very strong hook, especially when the drums drop out in places and the actual playing starts in the form of some beautiful keys.
