Japanese-born and London-based DJ/producer Tomoki Tamura began his Holic Trax imprint in 2012, as an extension of the Holic parties he’s been throwing across London and Tokyo over the past five years.
While the likes of Mr G, Chris Carrier and Rick Wade were drafted in to front the label’s first few releases, Tamura hooks up with Tuccillo under the ‘Doublet’ alias for a nicely rounded EP of richly-crafted deep house numbers.
The EP’s leading A-side Discovered Night is a deep house charmer that manages to be lush as well as driving, throwing a bubbling electro bassline over the top of a bed of sound that’s genuinely warm, ethereal and seductive. Discovered Night is the peaktime track of the EP.
Cosmic Sign is a vinyl-only track, reflective of the Holic imprint’s focus on the enduring format, and it comes in at a lower tempo with a deeper bass register. A wonky synth melody takes centre stage, with the swirling syths building behind it, with what makes for an accomplished atmosphere builder.
Meanwhile, the EP’s B-side Synthonic goes for a tougher vibe, dialing down Discovered Night’s more ethereal elements, replacing them with a more focused groove.
Add these three different parts together, and Tamura and Tuccillo have pulled off a very alluring EP with Doublet.
