Dogmatik is one of the UK's leading labels, thanks to the man behind it Alex Arnout. A DJ's DJ who is also a dab hand when it comes to production and engineering, Arnout is without a doubt one of the nation's treasures and deserves a lot more recognition than he already has. The label was home to a very early Maya Jane Coles release, Arnout acting like a mentor of sorts to her, not to mention the Flo Jam EP which came via Dusky, who were also relatively unknown when Arnout snapped them up for the label.

Which brings me to the latest release from Dogmatik's digital wing, courtesy of Sheffield-based artist Leon Atter. Unbeknownst to most of us, Leon has been working within the industry for around 25 years now – lending his talents to freelance music tutoring, as well as DJing and producing whenever he gets the time. As one might expect from someone who's been entrenched in the music for so long, his influences come from the old school – Chicago and Detroit, spliced with a bit of northern flavour from his hometown.

On the Never Stop EP we get some chunky, funky house cuts that really encapsulate the heady mix I've just mentioned. 'Never Stop, Never Give Up' is a catchy slice of NYC-style basement garage, with the kind of bassline that could only have been generated in the UK – meaty and bouncing, the gospel-esque vocals sounding like a soulful UK garage track from the mid-nineties, which is great.

'Elusive Soul' also features an infectious vocal sample, but works off a deeper, darker bassline and another, more haunting spoken-word sample that counteracts the singer. 'Got To Have It' makes no bones about its garage leanings, the percussion is skippy with shuffling drums and a funked up bassline that keeps it strictly UKG. Secretsundaze associate John Daly steps in with a killer remix of 'Never Stop', extending the vocal on his first mix and removing it completely on his dub mix.

Proper stuff and good to hear some music from a lesser known name that is still of a high quality. I wouldn't expect anything less from Dogmatik.
