fabric 14th Birthday, 30 Hours Of Non Stop MusicThe word ‘institution’ is thrown round far too readily in club culture. Any UK club that lasts over a year enjoys such ‘hushed tone’ venerations. Does anyone else find it a pretty fausty, dry and formal word? ‘Institution’ conjures up connotations of sensible organisations such as a charity or a school or a church. NOT a place where you can hear the most futuristic music possible, through one of the most fine-tuned soundsystems while climbing up sweat-drenched red brick walls until sunrise.

But maybe fabric is one club that actually does deserve such a title? Teaching us the ways of every genre worth knowing about – from Friday night’s boundary-bashing Fabriclive sessions to its Saturday night house and techno showdowns – fabric has indeed been like a school. Shucks, you could even apply the charity analogy if you tried hard enough; it’s provided us with somewhere safe to rave in London each and every weekend since October 1999.

Yup 1999… Right now you’ll either be feeling a little bit old or wondering what quaint activities clubbers enjoyed way back in the good old 20th century. Either way, on the weekend of October 18-19th fabric will turn a whopping 14. Yet it’s still charged with the on-point, forward-thinking underground line-ups and production values it was founded on. Terry Francis tells us “fabric has got to be the biggest influence and supporter of underground music in England. Maybe the world.” Check out the club’s birthday weekend line-up and you’ll find it impossible to disagree with him… …

It all kicks off on the Friday night with Fabriclive where hosts include Oneman, Critical Sound and Hit & Run. The line-up reads like a bass addict’s wet dream; Kasra, Oneman, Dub Phizix, Enei, Chimpo, Emperor, Sam Binga and J Rocc are all signed up and fully recruited. As is Chicago rapper Sasha Go Hard who’ll be making his UK appearance. Nice.

For most I Voice readers, though, it’s the Saturday night session which will really resonate. Stretching from 11pm to a staggering 5am Monday finish, this extended birthday session will ensure each of Fabric’s 14 years will be celebrated in a fittingly messy style. With no room allocations established as yet, even the line-up sparkles with a heady free-for-all attitude. Joining the club’s long-standing residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis guests include Ricardo Villalobos, Clockwork, Cosmin TRG, DJ Qu, Marcel Dettman, No Regular Play, PBR Streetgang, Skream, Shed, Soul Clap, Wolf & Lamb and many more taking us from Saturday night right the way through to Monday morning.

You best scrap any plans you have for church on Sunday: this institution has much more relevance.
