Is there anything better than a late night tale? Musings shared with nearest, dearest, a smoke, a spirit and with any luck - or at least good sense - the following day off work. Fireside flavours of the highest order, a chance to unwind and soak up the silliness while soundtracked by music’s furthest fringes. No, there is nothing better than a Late Night Tale. Especially when it’s been curated by Ninja Tune star Bonobo.

Rounding up another fine year, wherein his album The North Borders continued to confirm his place as one of dance music’s most expressive, organic composers, Bonobo provides a unique glimpse into his influences and tastes. The only way you’d get a better idea of his foundations and favourites would be to break into his house and raid his vinyl collection. Which is illegal. So, unless you want trouble with the law, this is as good as it gets. Which is pretty good indeed.

Spanning decades from Dorothy Ashby’s 1968 harp-plucking dream weaver “Essence Of Sapphire” and Nine Simone’s 1978Baltimore” (one of her funkiest appearances ever recorded if I’m not mistaken) to ridiculously upfront and on-point inclusions of Andrew Ashong’s cosmic hippy shuffler “Flowers”, Lapalux’s fractured fry-up “Gutter Glitter” and Shlohmo’s sexy postmodern soul fusion “Places”, Bonobo’s spun a fine yarn, joining the seriously disparate dots with depth and delicacy.

With surprises lurking on every corner – such as Peter & Kerry’s sultry cover of Beyonce – it’s clear Bonobo has considered each and every inclusion with clarity. What’s even more impressive is that there’s a measured mix flavour to the selection. Fronted by impressive artists across all genres – from Arctic Monkeys to Fatboy Slim - all Late Night Tales are worth checking out for schooling purposes alone, but some of the series often echo with a slightly disjointed arrangement. This isn’t the case with Bonobo’s selection, making it one of the best additions to the decade old series to date. Which is saying something.
