German producer dotSTRIPE might cut a fairly elusive figure when it comes to the limelight, but for want of a better description he's clearly a man who'd prefer to let the music do the talking.

On his debut outing for British imprint Act Natural he does exactly that, with his liking for a minimal backbone proving a refreshing antidote to a marketplace that's become flooded with generic “old-school” cuts.

Of course, one criticism of the minimal era (and there were a few) was that the music of the time lacked any sort of depth or soul. Such traits, however, cannot be attributed to the Make A Wish EP, a 4-tracker that's notable for the currents of drama and suspense that hark throughout.

It's ''Make A Wish'' itself that gets it off to a flyer, with shades of Detroit and a bumping bassline carrying the track over the finish line.

''Then It Happened'' meanders at a subtle pace too, with its many bulging synths lending it a captivating sheen.

"About Mary", complete with its sprightly, dexterous sound, makes for a mellow and multilayered twist on proceedings, before ''Jazz' neatly wraps up matters on a tip that's as vigirous and warm as it is refined and gloomy.
