Referred to as “the one with the piano” by the man himself, this release marks the beginning of a concerted production push by Jozef K. An established figure of the Manchester house and techno scene, success has come readily in 2013 through excursions with Winter Son of Ghosting Season fame, most notably with a standout release on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth - in the form of The Straw That Broke The Camels Back - and their 808 garnished live set being crowned as Resident Advisor Mix Of The Day.

Surfacing on Berlin’s Natural Rhythm - a home for established names such as Jordan Peak, Los Updates, Wighnomy Brothers, Andre Crom and Jay Tripwire - Shinjuku is infused with a large dose of the early Manchester spirit. The piano work that runs through the title track carries a certain naive end of night optimism, the sort of mood that only existed in the four walls of the Hacienda, far removed from and unconcerned with the critical scrutiny of today. Midnight Silhouette runs with the theme, taking a familiar chord progression and weaving in heartfelt strings over crisp beats.

The delicate Life Is Love rounds off the release, showing a lighter touch for someone used to tearing down the walls at Sankeys, an approach that allures in subtler ways. Still, even though emotional strains are being hit, the sounds on show are certainly geared towards the anthemic mentality, accessible from the off and immediate in impact. These are promising early steps from a producer starting to find his way into a more diverse sound and a statement of intent for 2014.
