Sometime collaborators John Barera and Will Martin get together for their first full release on Steffi’s Dolly, having already put out ‘Reality’ on a various artists release last year, a track which was considered good enough to be included at number eleven in the Little White Earbuds end-of-year chart.
Steffi herself makes an appearance here on remix duties, as Third Side along with the Analogue Cops, on a track that departs from the buoyancy of the three originals in favour of a dark, persistent grind.
It’s all good though, the remix going off in a necessarily different direction embodied by its reductive drive. It’s certainly a little more edgy than the original, but not as anthemic, losing out in those stakes to some classic, analogue chords and an ever-evolving loop from a varying, spaced-out template.
‘Nomad’ is cut from similar sonic cloth, but skips along at a rate of knots while adorned with brittle stabs, a whimsical synth and a barrel organ on crack. Finally, ‘Flux’ is a sunrise hands-in-the-air track if ever I’ve heard one, but it’s the soundtrack to a messy morning, its synthetic sweep containing multitudes of meaning.
You won’t get much more out of a floor-based four tracker these days. There’s a little of everything going on here and, although traditional tropes are given some exercise, they are also given an injection of fresh air which further solidifies the reputation these two producers are forging.
