Malta Access All Areas with Nicholas Spiteri While Croatia and Ibiza have their own obvious charms, there’s nothing wrong with going a little further afield in search of your clubbing kicks. If you’re feeling adventurous, then, you might want to head towards Malta. The little country, which lies just off the coast of Italy, has really seen its stock soar in recent times where electronic music is concerned, and so it is that we nabbed, Nicholas Spiteri, one of the main island promoters, to tell us more…

Introduce yourself for those who don’t know?
My name is Nicholas Spiteri and I’m one of the Directors of Lights Out Company Limited. My company and Fresh Events have been in the local dance entertainment industry and have been market leaders for the past 15 years.

Top international artists such as Faithless (live), Moby (live), Chemical Brothers (live), Underworld (live), David Guetta, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Calvin Harris, Afrojack and many more have been our headliners throughout the events we hosted to date.

How and when did you first fall in love with dance music yourself?
I started at the age of 17 with some local DJs and we’d organise events for 300/400 people. After a year or so, these events kept growing and we used to have 2000 people attending our local events. Then in 2004, we got in touch with Ministry of Sound and did out first event using their brand. Then things kept on growing year by year, and now we do large scale events with the likes of Calvin Harris, Armin Van Burren etc, as well as the only festival on the island, Creamfields, every year on the 14th of August.

Creamfields What’s it like promoting in Malta – are the council helpful, for example?
Things can get very messy because we are a small island, although we strive to ne the best at what we do and aim to give the local scene a proper taste of clubbing at every event. We are currently in talks with the present government and discussing the future of clubbing for the coming years.

What are the key things to get right at any party do you think?
Choosing the right Dj, venue & marketing strategies to get your message out there!

What makes a party in Malta different than anywhere else in the world?
Malta is magical and we have good weather for 8 months of the year. Everywhere is very close, so literally crossing the whole island wont take longer than 2 hours. Drinks are 2.5 euros at clubs, people are very friendly and always up for a good laugh.

Is trance the most popular sound in Malta – is there an underground scene too do you think?
Yes trance is still very popular on the island, with top names like Armin Van burren, Dash Berlin etc coming over and playing to sell out crowds. The underground scene has been growing over the past 5 years, with top names coming over, from Richie Hawin to Sasha, Digweed etc. Local promoters have their own club nights promoting the underground scene through various local Djs such as Carl Bee, Carl Lautier and Nicky Slim.

What else are you looking forward to or have you got planned?
We are currently working on Creamfields which is going to take place on the 14th August at the Gianpula Complex. This is the only festival which happens in Malta and we are very excited about it.
