Extrema Outdoor Festival - 12th July - Eindhoven, Netherlands - ReviewExtrema Outdoor Festival has now been going for an impressive 19 years and this edition before the big celebratory one next year still managed to pull out all the stops. As well as an edition in Belgium, this festival plays out on a recreational beach on Eindhoven, which makes for a great location even before the festival team go to town on making the place into their own village for a day.

Before you even get to hear any music you are struck with the size and detail of the place. Everywhere there are crazy dancers, people in fancy dress, cannons blasting off, mad visuals on screens, 3D mapping, fire work displays and myriad stalls selling food, drink and tons of crazy extras.

The crowd is a fairly young mix of girls and boys from all over Europe – some are serious techno heads, some are fresh-faced ravers but all 30, 000 of them seem to mingle happily.

The whole shebang lasts 12 hours so the important thing is to pace yourself here, but many don’t seem to as there are plenty of bodies lazing about in the sun come early evening. It’s not a surprise given how high energy many of the stages are.

We head to catch some big shiny beats, killer drops and electro-house fusions from stars like Afro Jack, Bakermat and Sneaky Sound System who all batter us with brightly coloured, wiggly synth lines, big bold drums and plenty of catchy vocal hooks.

Moving around the site and walking along the lake is a nice thing to do to catch a brief rest between musical offerings. Everywhere you are presented with a wall of colour be it one of the stages or simply the hoards of raves who mill about looking for their next sonic fix. For us one of the highlight’s was the keen techno offering that showcased talents from all across the globe.

Detroit’s original pioneer Jeff Mills was one of the best sets, he played for three hours and managed to work everyone into a deep hypnosis with his stripped back, sleek and futuristic sounds. UK legends Ben Sims and James Ruskin got a little more raw and hard hitting with their serrated offerings and Berghain boss Len Faki got seriously funky with his techno treats.

Set to a backdrop of huge fireworks, Fedde Le Grand played and impressive set that touched on all styles of electronic music and left a fine taste in the mouth of everyone as they filed out and back to whatever after party they had picked. All in all this was a great event and surely the 20th anniversary next year will be even more special.
