So festival season is over, but long live festival season! Dance music is now so universally popular that we don’t just attend mass outdoor events when the sun is shining, oh no – we can also head up mountains for snow based fun, trip to city centres for some cultural beats or head to the other side of the globe where in fact the sun is still shining. As such here comes our guide to the best winter festies in the world…

Movement is the cousin to famous Detroit festival DEMF. It is a culturally and environmentally aware festival that takes place over a week, includes lots of forums and workshops and plays out in some magical Italian venues, old and new. This year, Kerri Chandler, Blawan & Karen, Steffi, Timo Maas, Ellen Allien and Maceo Plex as well as many more all play so there will be lots to get stuck into during the weeklong celebrations.

Iceland is a place of stunning natural beauty, which makes attending this festival essential even before you hear the line-up. Taking places in various venues you will be treated to genre-hopping South African band John Wizards to Nguzunguzu's cutting-edge electronics, Caribou and weird dark pop band The Knife, who will be playing one of their last shows ever.

For many years now, I Love Techno has been the first and last festival you need to attend if your main diet is, um, techno. Now more than 20 years old, the 2014 edition offers both dexterous DJs and special live shows meaning that Ten Walls, Clean Bandit, Underworld, Loco Dice, Jamie Jones and Rødhåd will all rub shoulders. Also worth checking are Phantasy Sound dudes Erol Alkan and Daniel Avery, who go face-to-face and back to back.

As Americans continue to get re-enthused by the dance sounds they pioneered all those years ago, festivals like Time Warp US – i.e. cultured and underground and away from shiny EDM - are popping up more and more. This will be the first Time Warp US and it takes place in The Bronx, with the likes of Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Anthony Parasole, No Regular Play and residents from local parties BlkMarket Membership and Resolute all playing...

Now six years old, this festival at Riverwood Downs Mountain Valley Resort started out as a dub and psy trance affair. Nowadays deep house and techno are also featured heavily on the line-up and so in 2015 you can expect to get down to Detroit master Mike Huckaby as well as Ellen Allien, Eli Vereine, James Holden and many more...

Time Warp’s German cousin may get most of the headlines but the Dutch edition is now a firm fixture in the calendar of discerning dance fans everywhere. As well as a healthy Dutch faction of Job Jobse, Nuno Dos Santos and Detroit Swindle, European stars like DJ Tennis, Maya Jane Coles, Karenn and Detroit’s Robert Hood all line up, as do some acts that hark back to TW’s German roots in the form of Ricardo Villalobos, Monika Kruse & Karotte, Chris Liebing and Sven Väth.

It’s a bit of a myth that New Year’s Eve is the best time to party. For electronic music lovers, every weekend is another party and opportunity to top the last one. As such you would be wise to do yourselves a favour, save the cash and head out to BPM festival in January 2015 for a week of serious day and nite time partying in a truly majestic setting. Lineup is to be confirmed by last year everyone from Seth Troxler to Craig Richards, Chris Liebing to Guy Gerber played, so expect more of the same.
