Pirupa’s addictive strain of percussive, groove-laden, dark but party-focused tech-house has propelled him to the forefront of a surging number of emerging, young Italian producers that have rose over the last couple of years. Appearing on the likes of Defected, Cecille, VIVa Music, Noir Music, Cr2, Rebirth, Size Records and Get Physical, the idiosyncratic producer has taken up a commanding presence on the underground circuit. Now returning to Nic Fanciulli’s Saved Records after an absence of two years, Pirupa is back with an excellent three-track EP of murky, rolling tech-house.
Kicking off amidst tense surroundings “Wise” has an uneasy sensation right from the start. A nervous energy is created through a simple, repetitive bassline, bubbling drums, dramatic pads and succinct melodies. As the tempo quickens, the track contains enough drive and energy to work for the dancefloor, but its almost mystic appeal remains in the darkened and unwelcoming atmosphere throughout.
“Can You Hear Me” is less intense, preferring instead to settle into an easily flowing and addictive groove. Its, deep, flowing bass runs through the bottom end like great river, dictating the direction of the rest of the track. Loopy FX and repetitive vocals skip over the top as chopped-up synths flutter and swirl around to create a highly energized and intoxicating soundscape. Throughout.
“Sunrain” is the most distinctive of the tracks. Its enticing rhythms built on a backbone of cascading drums and its groove based on the interplay of chiming melodies and rolling bass, the track is full to the brim with colour and personality. It’s a layered, heady mix which once again marks Pirupa out as a production force to be reckoned with.
