From our encounters of Dean Demanuele’s music so far, his is a sound palette that tends to extend to up-tempo house in particular. While it’s made with finesse, it can often lack subtlety, although whether this is because much of his previous releases have brought him to the likes of Mobilee, Leena and Bedrock, we can never be sure. Either way, his latest on his own label, Dazed & Confused, isn’t just a chance for him to shine on his own terms, but it’s also a chance for him to show us the other side to his spectrum. And it’s fair to say too, that he does an expert job at doing exactly that.
Lucky, the title track, is first off. A plucky track that’s full of emotive vibes, it courses through with a fat bottom end and a curious bassline that keeps itself firmly in check. The spine with which the track is layered around, it sounds particularly adept when it’s paired with a mound of simmering sounds and some otherworldly sounds that help give it a dramatic edge. That said, it’s the B-side that’s really caught our attention.
‘We R Well’ is – as I attested to earlier – proof that Demanuele can shine when away from the inevitable glare that accompanies life at some of the scene’s bigger labels. Tightly-woven and expertly laid together, it threatens all the time to engulf us with a raucous house beat, but instead stays on the right side of subtle. If you’re looking for a track with which to start your next set off with, this moody number might just be the ones for you.
