Five years running a label is no mean feat in today’s transient market. Berlin based Bloody Mary aka Marjorie Migliaccio has been at the helm of Dame-Music from the outset and steered the ship with vision and determination. To celebrate Dame-Music anniversary and the 30th release on the label, a compilation is forthcoming the 15th June 2015. We spoke to her about what’s in store for the anniversary and her plans for the future.
The compilation includes 8 tracks, one from me, Boo Williams, Kate Simko & Derek Plaslaiko, Anthony Constans, Gerome Sportelli, The Jaydes, Sierra Sam & Pascal Hetzel and Anaxander... The tracks and Artists I chose for this compilation fit very well together from acid house to techno.Congratulations on your half decade anniversary - how will you celebrate?
Thanks!! Time is flying; it has already been 5 years of music and happiness. To celebrate this anniversary and the 30th release on the label, a Various Artists compilation is forthcoming on the 15th of June 2015. The compilation includes 8 tracks, one from me, Boo Williams, Kate Simko & Derek Plaslaiko, Anthony Constans, Gerome Sportelli, The Jaydes, Sierra Sam & Pascal Hetzel and Anaxander. The tracks and Artists I chose for this compilation fit very well together from acid house to techno.
What’s been the highlight of running Dame Music so far?
As a producer a highlight is the freedom to release the music that I feel without thinking about a label quota. As a label owner the highlight is the chance to discover new artists around the world and to build a real family with my artist friends. However it is also a lot of work to run a label, especially when you are still producing vinyl in this digital era.
It was great that Dame-Music was born in Berlin because I needed advice from my friends at the beginning; it’s never easy to go from DJ/ Producer to Label Owner...How much does Berlin play a part in your sound and vision?
I had fallen in love with Berlin in 2004 and I decided to move here. I started working on the concept to build a label in 2009 and finally the first Dame-Music release came out in June 2010.
It was great that Dame-Music was born in Berlin because I needed advice from my friends at the beginning; it’s never easy to go from DJ/ Producer to Label Owner. I have had the chance to play all around the world and to be influenced by many things. It’s always good to speak with many people and to take influences from new countries and cultures.
Tell us a bit about your studio - any interesting equipment?
My studio is the place where I spend the most time during the week! (I keep one day off to go to the record shop, I’m still digging for vinyl and it’s a real passion of mine. I'm always excited to play my new records on stage during the weekend.)
I’m really into analog gear because it’s fun for me to make music this way. I need to touch, to feel and to create all sounds with my hands and ears. I don’t like working on a computer for making music or anything else.
When you deejay do you have any self-imposed policies?
To have the turntables fixed on stage & a quality sound system!
What’s the most astonishing thing you’ve seen in a club?
What makes me always the most happy is when I reach the point when the crowd and I become one. It’s magic to feel the power of the music all together at the same time!!
Given the choice, would you ban smart phones from dance floors?
Many clubs already have this policy and nobody complains about it. What happens on the dance floor stays in our memories.
What’s next for Dame Music?
Up next on Dame-Music (after the Dame-Music 030 - 5 Year Anniversary in June) I will release a full release by myself at the end of September. I really hope that the next 5 years of the label will be the same pleasure that I’ve had with the first 5 years and I hope to speak about the 10 year anniversary with you.
