Coincidance Music Festival 2015 - Interview with CEOs Fernan Left & Alex Ferrer

Attracting clubbers from all over Asia, the Americas and Europe, Coincidance is a magical Mexican festival that takes you through the end of the year and into the next one in style. Musically, you can expect disco, house, techno and plenty in between from the likes of Eduardo De La Calle, Jimpster, Crazy P, Jay Haze, Fred Everything, Balcazar & Sordo and many more while his one of a kind festival also offers lots of great extras such as local foods, drinks, cocktails and juices.

The festival will take place in 2 of the best beach clubs in Playa del Carmen, a gorgeous 5* hotel rooftop with its pool, a secret location in a Dali-style house in the jungle and even some boat parties...The accommodation is top notch and given the beautiful location you can also enjoy picturesque beaches, explore the magic and ancient Mayan pyramids and dive with sharks on the Riviera Maya coast. Just 3000 people attend in all, and last year’s event picked up props from DJs and dancers all over the word. To find out more about this year’s festival, we spoke to the people behind it.

Who is behind this new festival and how long has it been going?
Fernan: Coincidance Music Festival is organized by Coincidance Events, a Las Vegas based company specialized in events worldwide, in partnership with Deeplomatic Recordings, a London based deep house record label. Coincidance 2015-2016 is its second edition after the very successful debut last New Year’s Eve.

How hard was it to find a venue at first and what does this venue and location offer?
Fernan: Last year it was quite hard to find a venue, as it was the first edition of the festival and nobody knew about it! This year, however, different venues have even approached us after they knew we almost got sold out last year. We can’t disclose much info about the festival locations at this stage, but we can say that the festival will take place in 2 of the best beach clubs in Playa del Carmen, a gorgeous 5* hotel rooftop with its pool, a secret location in a Dali-style house in the jungle and even some boat parties. All these venues are located in Playa del Carmen, already known worldwide as the Mexican Ibiza and especially famous as one of the best places to spend NYE.

We are trying to offer a different concept, making sure that our clients enjoy a wider musical spectrum..What gap are you plugging in the market, do you think?
Fernan: We are offering a festival with some of the best artists in the world that happens in New Year’s Eve in a warm location in the Caribbean. I think the combination of those 3 aspects make Coincidance unique. There are other great festivals with a great line-up, but while some of them are in warm locations with pristine beaches, very few of them are in NYE. It’s not easy to find a spot in this planet to welcome the new year dancing in flip flops to the music of 25 of the best artists in the world, is it?

Alex:  In my opinion most festivals always bring the same line up, always the same names over and over, go to a festival and basically you have been to all of them, musically speaking… We are trying to offer a different concept, making sure that our clients enjoy a wider musical spectrum, all of this in hand-pick special locations, making the whole experience become something unique; a memory that will last forever.

How was last year’s event? Have you changed anything for this year?
Fernan: Last year’s event was truly amazing, watch the after movie. We got more than 3,000 people from 26 countries (including Iran) which were much more than what we expected! That’s why we have extended the festival from 3 to 4 days, adding a new beach club, the rooftop pool and the boat parties. This has caused the organization to grow and increase resources for this second edition. So, we have many more people working in Coincidance and have almost doubled the investment.

The most important driver is of course the quality of the music. We try to blend together a group of artists that exactly match with the feeling that we are trying to create in the festival, big smiles, big love...What crowd are you aiming to appeal to? Who comes to the festival?
Alex: Basically anyone that is willing to share their good vibes and is willing to celebrate the NYE while have an amazing time and meeting other people. Last year it was sort of a mixed crowd; lots of burners (Burning Man attendees), a lot of people from US, Australia and the UK, Canadians, some Germans and a few Dutch, we even have some Japanese and Korean people that had an awesome time, some of last year’s attendees have already bought their tickets for this year edition as well, which confirms that people had an awesome time in the past event.

What will be on offer as well as the music? Any extras or treats people should know about?
Fernan: In all locations we’ll have the best quality drinks available, obviously. In some of the locations, we will also have natural juices, food stands, Tantric massages, natural swimming pools, fire performances, and many other surprises!

Alex:  Shamanic cocktails! Yes! We know you loved it last year so we are back for more!! We have a special cocktail, made with a secret ancient recipe that will make you feel in heaven! Only for the jungle party, first come first served.

What informs the booking policy? Is it just music you, the team, like, or is it driven by social media stats or?
Alex: I’d say it’s a combination of both. The most important driver is of course the quality of the music. We try to blend together a group of artists that exactly match with the feeling that we are trying to create in the festival, big smiles, big love.

We love top artists, but we don’t especially like super stars and we try to keep things real and underground... Fernan:  I’d add that we usually do not book artists that have 1 million fans in Facebook or something like that. We love top artists, but we don’t especially like super stars and we try to keep things real and underground. The festival aims to be a showcase of the best underground artists worldwide, so you won’t see any EDM superstars here!

Any tips for anyone coming to the country for the first time?
Fernan: They will love Mexico. Mexico is a hidden gem with tons of wonders to offer and the warmest people ever - everybody falls in love with this country! And especially, the Riviera Maya coast with its world class beaches, ancient Mayan pyramids, lost fishing villages, sharks to dive with, and gorgeous “cenotes” – very few places in the world have that much to offer!

Alex: Even if you are into spicy food always ask for mild spicy. Don´t spend your whole holidays in the beach, explore, Mexico has a lot to offer.

What are you most looking forward to about this year’s event?
Fernan: That wonderful feeling when it’s December 31 at midnight and we manage to find a couple of minutes to cheer with champagne while watching a happy crowd filling up the dance floor with the best music.

Alex: The afterhours boat party on January the 1st, going to be epic!!
