Catch Hector at SolidGrooves London Winter Showcase at Fire 28/11

Hector cut his teeth working at Phonica Records. There he was introduced to Anja Schneider and Loco Dice, and thus he was swiftly snapped up to work for Mobilee and Desolat respectively. We spent some time catching up with him ahead of his appearance for SolidGrooves in London later this month.

Right now I'm in Barcelona, and I just moved into a new house. I love this city as it is the perfect mixture between each life and city life, and has great weather most of the time...How are you? How was your summer? What’s been good and what’s been bad?
My residency at Music On was definitely the highlight of my summer, also playing festivals like Awakenings and Ultra Japan. Bad parts… I’ve no complaints, I had an amazing summer!

And how was ADE recently for you? Did you have many meetings or was it more about partying?
I had a couple of press bits/interviews to do, but I was there to focus on the Mindshake showcase and PRJCT Amsterdam which were the two events I was involved in. Both were amazing!

Where are you living right now? You move around a lot, so what made you pick where you are today?
Right now I'm in Barcelona, and I just moved into a new house. I love this city as it is the perfect mixture between each life and city life, and has great weather most of the time. The airport is also easily accessible which I really need right now!

Tell us about your new remix of Lucio’s Recort… how did you approach that?
The label approached me. I heard the original track and felt I could do something really good with it, and in the end I was happy with the result.

Ideally I usually prefer to be in the studio with everything in front of me as I always draw a lot more inspiration when I’m in the studio as opposed to making music from my laptop...Is there any one bit of gear or software that really defines your studio set up, is there one you always go to?
Not really to be honest... as every track I make, I use different pieces of equipment.

With all the touring, how often do you find time to get in the studio? Do you write on the road or only when at home?
Whenever I'm on the road touring I will make music, but if I need time in the studio I’ll always make time. Ideally I usually prefer to be in the studio with everything in front of me as I always draw a lot more inspiration when I’m in the studio as opposed to making music from my laptop. But I don’t always have the luxury of having the time to go to the studio with my travelling schedule, so I’ve got to make the most of my time. I’m currently setting up a new studio in Barcelona so it will be a lot closer to my home, and will have more accessibility to it.

What do you make of all the social media beefs of people like DJ Sneak? Is it funny, do some people need calling out, or is it just him doing it to get more hype, you think?
Personally I think it’s just a way to make hype to be honest.

I wanted to start the events to take it back to the basics of having a good time with your friends just playing quality records. No egos or headliners...Tell us about Vatos Locos, what it means and where it comes from?
It started from the movie ‘Blood in Blood Out’... it’s a Mexican expression from an old gang which translates to ‘crazy guys

Have you started a party series under that name? Why do that? Who is involved?
We started the party last year at BPM with some of my favourite DJs and producers and friends... Chad Andrew, David G-tronic, Sece, Randall M, Javier Carballo and Pinto. Martin Buttrich was a special guest. I wanted to start the events to take it back to the basics of having a good time with your friends just playing quality records. No egos or headliners.

SolidGrooves Showcase

You’ll play in London soon for the SolidGrooves showcase - how do you find playing in London compared to elsewhere?
London is always a special place to play for me as I lived there for 11 years so always feels like going home in a way.

What else have you got coming up/are you excited about? Have you got any new releases on the way?
Yes I have a couple of new releases coming soon. I have an EP with Serkal called 'My Cloud' on vinyl coming in the next few days and also the Lucio Spain remix called ‘Recort’ is out now. But I'm most excited about the launch of my new label VL launching the end of this year...
