Artist: Wolfsheim - Title: The Sparrow And The Nightingales EP - Label: Dark Entries

Dark Entries is currently a buy-on-sight label for me; it’s resuscitation of obscure fin de siècle electronica tapping into a vein of both nostalgia, and a real need to have my sonic taste buds tickled by something both esoteric in some cases, and magical in others.

Wolfsheim tick all boxes and more as far as my specific tastes are concerned. The original composition here was released in 1991, but could easily have been the soundtrack to the visit I made to Berlin in 1984, its glacial synths and dramatic vocal personifying a certain type of cold war wisfulness. The Ancient Methods remix respects the original to the extent that it’s not completely coated in muck, stretching the vocal wafer-thin within a relatively conservative veneer of percussive industrialism.

My only complaint about this release is that the original isn’t longer, but it’s pretty good as it is, the EBM – flavoured remix complimenting its ostentatious romanticism like some sort of uninhibited, steroid-fuelled alter ego.
