Watergate 20 Matthias Meyer

The Hamburger Matthias Meyer since the past two years is on resident duty at Berlin Watergate Club and this year Matthias new duty was to select and mix the 20th instalment of the club’s mix series “Watergate 20”; a 19 house tracks selection mixed in a 80 minutes session of “boundless sonic spaces of lush melodics, organic grooves and sentimental sensations”…The compilation mix does exactly what it says on the tin!

Matthias took the time to speak to us here at I Voice about the journey behind "Watergate 20" Mix CD, his home town Hamburg and his Berlin home base Watergate Club.

So Matthias what have you been up to recently? Life treating you well?
Yes I am great, thank you. I was traveling a lot and really busy with making the CD, but now I’ am done with it and ready for some action!

I tried to put only tracks that sound like me and reflect my fav taste of music. That means it has to be groovy, housy, emotional and strings...How long have you been resident at Watergate and how did you first hook up?
That’s a long story. I did a track for Lee Jones Watergate Mix CD 07 back in 2010 and he invited me for the release party. Afterwards I also had some gigs with my other home label Liebe*Detail there. In 2012 they asked me for an exclusive track for the Watergate X compilation. I gave them “Fallin” and it was quite popular. A few months later I did another remix for Lee JonesA Perfect Kick, I think that was the time when they asked if you wanna join the Watergate family. That was one of the best moments in my career!

Tell us about Watergate 20; how the tracks have been selected, was there a process and how long did it take?
I tried to put only tracks that sound like me and reflect my fav taste of music. That means it has to be groovy, housy, emotional and strings; I really love strings! And I tried to do it the same way as I like to play as a DJ, which means a mix of new stuff, old stuff and unreleased exclusive tunes. I also put some "Meyer" classics as well, tracks I’ am playing for years like the secret Innervisions Orchestra Mix of Underworld

It was not easy to do it, you just have to work with a list of like 40 which I gave them months before. At the end I put 3 tracks that were not on my list and didn’t had the licence for, but I knew it would be OK because I personally know the label or the artists. At the end it took me a week to finish it, because I tried some different versions of it and choose the one with the best flow.

Do you have any favorite tracks on this mix that we should know about?
I really like the exclusive track from Gorje Hewek & Izhevski. I’ am a big fan of strings and it has also a great groove. The moment when Palms Trax In Gold kicks in is also really special; and of course the UnderworldCrocodile (Innervisions Orchestra Mix). This is one of my all-time favorite tracks.

I’m from Hamburg, so this city was always a big influence for me...Was this mixed digitally or on two turntables and a mixer?
I did it digitally with Ableton live but I recorded the final transitions and mixing live with a controller, beers and cigarettes to have a little little club feeling;-)

How much does Berlin play a part in your sound and vision?
To be honest not that much because I'm not living in Berlin and never lived there. I’m from Hamburg, so this city was always a big influence for me.

I like Berlin too because there are sooooo many artists and friends living there..Hamburg is mostly known for deep house music from Dj Koze, Pampa, Smallville guys like Lawrence, Smallpeople, Diynamic guys like Solomun, Stimming, Hosh and of course our home label Liebe*Detail where is all started. I like Berlin too because there are sooooo many artists and friends living there and of course my home base Watergate is there.

Who makes it onto your fantasy line-up for a club night?
That’s a tough question. There are so many great artists out there; I think I will need a festival with a few stages for it. For sure my best buddy Patlac has to be there!

Dance music is bigger than ever - do you have any predictions for the scene in 2016?
Yes dance music is big but I have nothing against it, I think it’s good for everybody. More clubs, parties and people who are listen to our kind of music. Around 1995 was also a big hype about electronic music.

Without that hype in the 90s I would probably not sitting here and answer your questions...I grew up in a small village and we had no parties or record shops around us to discover electronic music. So we were lucky that electronic music was that big, it was at TV, magazines, radio. Without that hype in the 90s I would probably not sitting here and answer your questions. Let see what the future brings.

And what's next on the agenda for you and the label?
My Watergate Mix Cd is out now. At the end of April/beginning of May is the release of the vinyl with all 4 exclusive tracks. At the same time we will release 2 digital releases with my exclusive tracks and another one with the tracks of YokoO and Gorje Hewek/Izhesvki. I just finished a remix for Anjuna Deep which will be released in May and now I am about to finish a track for a Rumors compilation, the label of Guy Gerber. Afterward finally time to start some new music.
