Another installment of Prague’s quickly establishing event Chillin Prague is approaching. We caught up with the headliner, DJ and producer Gorge, and had a quick chat.
First of all, thanks a lot for doing this interview with us!
Just came back from Off Sonar and we had a great time there and finally caught some sun there...How’s life treating you nowadays?
Very well. Just came back from Off Sonar and we had a great time there and finally caught some sun there as it was raining in Germany for 2 months now.
Now I’m back in the studio working on some new stuff for the next couple of months.
Have you played in Prague before?
No it’s my first time and I’m really looking forward to it as I really like this city.
All right, first things first; can you quickly tell us what got you into electronic music, and what was your first house tune you heard?
I got into electronic music in the late 80’s inspired by acts like Depeche Mode, Front 242, and with the beginning of the 90’s the German electronic scene developed here in Frankfurt around acts like Thorsten Fenslau. It got more and more international attention and the parties were a mixture of electronic music including house, trance, acid and sometimes breakbeats.
I’m doing a lot of stuff at the moment producing music for me and helping also some other artists with their stuff...You seem to quite a busy producer. Can you walk us through your day briefly?
I’m doing a lot of stuff at the moment producing music for me and helping also some other artists with their stuff. We have the studio and label office in one location so usually I’m working here 4-5 days a week running the label 8bit with Nick Curly and RYM with my partner SKAI. I’m a daytime worker so my day starts at 6:30 am organizing the family and leaving for studio around 8 am. Sometimes I take the Monday off when it was long weekend playing.
What are you working on at the moment? Any special musical projects that we should know about?
I’m working on a release for Audiojack’s label Gruuv at the moment which is nearly done. Also I finished my next 8bit release for august and started a remix for Dario D’attis who is also one of my favourite producers at the moment. Beside this I started some edits together with Nick Curly which I’m really looking forward to playing them out soon.
What inspires you?
Sun, water and good music...
Your favorite piece of gear at the moment?
I love working with the Native Instruments Complete Bundle in combination with Maschine and S88. It gives you amazing possibilities in finding and creating new sounds and takes music production to another level.
One of my favourite places is Warung in Brazil. Really special location, next to the beach, giving you great moments with the sunrise in the early morning...What’s your favorite set up for djing?
Very standard . 2-3 CDJ 2000 Nexus, Allen & Heath X-Sone 92.
How do you prepare for your gigs? Do you have some sort of a routine?
Not really. There’s always a couple of new demos and tracks i want to try out and usually I check my music in the studio as the soundsystem there is telling the truth about the intensity of a track. I organize everything with iTunes and Rekordbox, which makes things very easy to backup.
You favorite place to play? I know it’s difficult to say but, let’s just say if you were to choose two favorite places?
One of my favourite places is Warung in Brazil. Really special location, next to the beach, giving you great moments with the sunrise in the early morning. Also I loved La Santanera in Playa del Carmen. The energy there was very intense last time I played.
What do you listen to apart from house?
I’m open for every kind of music. Usually I listen to calm and chillout stuff and also some older hip hop music.
Your favorite dish?
All kinds of Ceviche...
Any message for your Prague fans?
I’m looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday and celebrating a great party together!
