RecMix a one stop recording and distribution tool app for DJs and live performers, allowing users to record their sets directly into a smartphone, store it or share it via in-app streaming, email, social media channels, or direct upload to SoundCloud. We caught up with RecMix founder & CEO Berber Krop to find out more…
I noticed that we’d often listen to great music but not often were artists recording their own sets...When and why you decided to create RecMix?
RecMix is my first venture. I came up with the idea about a year and a half ago and decided to create it for several reasons. I was previously working in finance and was keen to do something more entrepreneurial, and it was in music that I found a great project.
I started to date a professional DJ and found myself going to many parties, where I was exposed to good music and what was for me a new and exciting world, and I naturally started to look around for interesting problems to solve and a contribution I could make.
I noticed that we’d often listen to great music but not often were artists recording their own sets. It turned out that one reason is that hand recorders are quite bulky and DJs often forget to bring or plug them. And even when they do, they still have to upload the recording to their computer before they can edit it and upload it to streaming platforms.
We launched the app in the Apple App Store in early January, where Apple promoted it under best new apps in 21 countries...I thought why is there no app that offers a one-stop tool to record, store and distribute your recordings? In the end everyone always has their phone on them… I started to develop an idea of a product that would be the ultimate recording and distribution tool for the live performer and also a community of artists and listeners, although it took a while for the concept to evolve and to find the resources to execute it.
We started development in August last year and launched the app in the Apple App Store in early January, where Apple promoted it under best new apps in 21 countries. Now we're focusing on the next stage of marketing and growth to transform RecMix into a widely adopted recording and distribution tool for DJs and for any live performer as well as a great platform to connect with music creators and find interesting and exclusive recordings.
Can you describe the basic functions of RecMix and how it works?
RecMix is a convenient tool for DJs and live performers, allowing users to record their sets directly into their smartphone, replacing bulky portable hand recorders. You can use the iPhone microphone or connect an audio interface for optimal quality.
The app allows users to record in high-quality WAV & M4A formats & builds a library of recordings, which they can then store on the phone & on the cloud or share via in-app streaming...The app allows users to record in high-quality WAV and M4A formats and builds a library of recordings, which they can then store on the phone and on the cloud or share via in-app streaming, email, social media channels, or direct upload to SoundCloud. This eliminates the need to separately upload to different platforms, as is required when using hand recorders.
We will soon integrate other platforms to give users the possibility to reach a wide variety of audiences and also look to facilitate monetization options for artists and labels.
You are official recording partner with some of the best festivals; can you tell us a bit more?
In addition to getting support from well-known artists such as Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Apollonia, Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Shaun Reeves, Ryan Crosson and tINI (among others), we want to be present where our users are, to capture sets that they would otherwise never be able to listen to again. Plus give those that can't attend the event a chance to hear these talented DJs first.
We have recorded sets in Ibiza clubs like DC10 Circoloco, Amnesia, Ushuaia and Sankeys. We have also partnered with a few major festivals, such as Time Warp, BPM and SXMusic Festival, and we're in discussions to become an Official Recording Partner for a few more.
The goal is for RecMix to become the new recording standard for DJ mixes & ultimately for all live recorders...What was the best session that have been recorded and shared so far with RecMix?
Ricardo Villalobos’ set from Time Warp US, which was one of the first sets he's released in a long time and received a lot of attention from the music community.
What is the next main goal for Rexmix UG to achieve?
The goal is for RecMix to become the new recording standard for DJ mixes and ultimately for all live recorders. We want to develop a strong community of DJs and fans, which will allow for optimal sharing and enjoyment of these mixes.
I would like RecMix to be tool that DJs use to record their sets, the first platform where they post their recorded sets and a source of interesting and exclusive new content for listeners. With the support of future investors, we are planning to engage the DJ community and create awareness of our solution via partnerships with artists, clubs and festivals. With this support, we are aiming to make this the ultimate tool not only for professional DJs but also for all their fans – both artists and listeners.
