Interview with Berlin’s new live act & production project, GHEIST

Hailing from Germany, GHEIST is a new live act and production project founded last year at Berlin’s Riverside Studio; the concept based on 10 years of friendship and studio works involves an electronica band and a DJ.  We caught up with the guys to discuss their debut EP on Exploited and how their new found partnership came to be...

GHEIST is the German word for Ghost so when we first heard the name everyone knew it was the right name for the project...Hey guys thanks for joining us today! How are things in life for you right about now?
Hello and thank you for having us! Things are going pretty well and we are very happy that our new project GHEIST is getting the attention and everything feels right at the moment so we can´t complain!

I want to start by asking about your unusual name, GHEIST. Where does it stem from, is it related to the comic book and game?
No, of course we knew about the game and the comics but it was not the reason of our name. The name GHEIST was more a conceptual idea which means that everyone of us already had or still has a name in the business so we wanted to keep that past more in the background, a fresh start more likely! GHEIST is the German word for Ghost so when we first heard the name everyone knew it was the right name for the project.

We all have a very similar taste in music so it is in general fun to work together, either on the stage or in the studio...How did you initially hook up? Where and when did you meet and who was it?
We all know each other for more than 10 years now, it started all in Mannheim at the Popakedemie and since then we are best friends in the Studio or privat :)  In 2010 we decided it would be the best for us to move to Berlin, and now we all are living here and we are more than happy that we took the decision!

Working as a band do you ever find yourselves having contrasting ideas, whether it is in the studio, on stage or behind the decks? If so how do you decide what gets used?
Of course it´s not always easy but we found a good way to work together so that everyone is happy with their position, but it was actually very smooth as we all have a very similar taste in music so it is in general fun to work together, either on the stage or in the studio! Or the Bar after the studio :D

Your  debut EP "First Day" is about to drop on Exploited, how did that relationship come about?
We worked the last year very hard on the new project GHEIST and this spring we had all our songs ready and we knew that we can go out there, so at that moment friends of us were already playing our tracks in clubs/ podcasts and one of them was for Exploited, this is how we got the connection and then everything started!

Our first release “First day“ :) will show you who GHEIST is & we are very excited about it...How happy were you with the end product? How would you describe the sound and attitude on the EP? Is it exactly in line with what you want to convey?
Of course we had some times in the studio where we questioned if that is really our sound or if that is really the way were we wanna go, because everyone had a different idea of the sound but we balanced that very quick and now we are feeling comfortable with the outcome and the way how we work!

The good thing is that we knew from the beginning in which direction we don´t wanna go. Our first release “First day“ :) will show you who GHEIST is and we are very excited about it.

After 10 years of friendship & working in the studio together we decided to use our band & DJ background to create something new!Tell us a bit about your production process; when you’re coming up with a new track, what do you start on? Do you have a particular formula you use?
Most of the time we start collecting as many ideas as possible; mainly just a few bars with some soundscape and the beginning of a theme or a musical hook which can be a drum or a melody.

After that we decide which ideas to work on and which ones we’re going to bring to an end. When we have the basic idea we go into detail in sound and arrangement.

From the moment on the first version of a track is done we go back to it from time to time and do some little or big changes till we are all happy with it. Sometimes things go very fast and sometimes not.

In the EP press release GHEIST is tagged as a Berlin based conspiracy; why a conspiracy?
The conspiracy was a logical conclusion for us, after 10 years of friendship and working in the studio together we decided to use our band and DJ background to create something new!

Everyone is equal & no one cares from where you coming from or which religion you have & we are proud & happy to have this in Berlin / Germany...What do you make of the scene in Germany now? Better or worse than it used to be?
In general the music scene in Germany is still growing and I hope it will stay that way! It happens so much over the years. Everyone is equal and no one cares from where you coming from or which religion you have and we are proud and happy to have this in Berlin / Germany.

Do you think electronic music should have a social and political conscious in anyway, like it used to when it first emerged, or has it changed into something else now?
As I mentioned before I believe that electronic music developed to that extend that people are more willing to break out of their usual opinions and are more open and accepting towards new and unfamiliar things. They are more tolerant and do not care where you come from, which sex you are or how much money you earn.  And the bigger the electronic music scene and its community of tolerant people becomes, the less intolerance towards racism or similar will be out there. This is a great development and we hope that someday it manages to reach every part of this world.

You have also a residence at Watergate and how did you first connect?
No we are not residents at Watergate. Watergate is like a second home for us, we are good friends with the whole team and we love to go there after the studio for 1 or 2 drinks, usually it´s more than that :)  We are getting so much support from them that is really amazing, Watergate was the first club were GHEIST could play and we are so thankful that they had the trust in us and still have !It´s always nice that we can play in our fav club with all our friends

Finally what plans do you have for the rest of the year? Will there be any live dates on the horizon or any others releases?
Yes, we got some really nice requests the last days for new live shows and for new releases. The plan is to release also a 2nd EP by the end of the year but yes in general we are just enjoying performing and we are really looking forward for whole GHEIST journey!
