A frontrunner for some of the finest music in underground house and techno, German born DJ and producer Marc Miroir has been working tireless over the last 20 years in the clubs, in the studio, and behind the scenes as boss of the Paso Music imprint, which he founded in 2004 along with Sebrok, Micha Klang & Jo Spallek.
I am super satisfied with the output of Paso this year...Always creating music that’s expansive and evolving over time, the Berlin based artist takes another step forward with his brilliant soon to be released second LP entitled ‘Identity Kit’. We caught up with Marc Miroir for a quick chat.
Hey Marc, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. What have you been up to this year?
In 2016 I finished the long working on my second album ‘Identity Kit’. It will be released in December this year. It was a labor-intensive but very productive year. In addition to deejaying, producing, the label work, I´m running together with Max Moll for almost 4 years now the monthly party MEMBERS at Kosmonaut Club in Berlin which enjoys great popularity.
Finally, 'Identity Kit' comes on CD and as a download in December...I do also the booking and we invite friends and / or DJ's whom we appreciate very much. Its nice to see it growing, so now colleagues from all over Germany are asking for a date.
We had many great evenings e.g. with Monika Kruse, Sascha Dive, Ellen Allien, Ian Pooley and of course with our great residents: Handmade, HGR, TKHN and Sean Andino. Also, I am super satisfied with the output of Paso this year. There were strong releases from Distale, Mark Deutsche, Musoé, Alican or Hanna Hais, as well as the great Matthew Styles remix of 'Love me Again' feat. Elif Biçer. Finally, 'Identity Kit' comes on CD and as a download in December.
Can you talk to us about running Paso? What is it you set out to achieve when starting label?
I started the Label with 3 friends of mine in 2004. We were four guys full of action from Berlin, Nuremberg, Erlangen and Würzburg. For 4 years now I have been running the label alone by myself. The philosophy was and is to release good, functional club music, which I like to play in my sets. From House to Techno everything goes, main thing is: it has to have that certain something.
The philosophy was & is to release good, functional club music, which I like to play in my sets... Any personal favourites from the Paso back catalogue?
To me every release is special. Of course there is a special connection to my own releases. For example ‘Kraft’ incl. the fantastic Gregor Tresher Remix in 2009 has marked the biggest success in label history. And my first album ‘Hitting Home’ in 2012 got great attention all over.
But also the releases of Distale, Mark Deutsche & Musoé or Martin Woerner were milestones in the label history. Not to forget all the great remixes of super producers like Daniel Stefanik, Einzelkind, Matthew Styles, Fred P, Christian Smith, Steve Lawler, Deadbeat, Ramon Tapia, Adam Port, Pan-Pot or Anja Schneider…
You released a lot of music over the years – how have you kept your sound fresh and evolving?
I´m getting my inspiration from my DJ sets and from Berlin´s unique nightlife. For example my party MEMBERS gives me so much inspiration and ideas that I´m going often directly to the studio after the party to transfer my thoughts into new productions. And of course I´m going out to listen to other DJ´s I´m interested in.
I’m quite a long time in the music business & it was time to reflect my career so far...Can you tell us about ‘Identity Kit’ – what sort of sound were you going for on the album and what was the writing process like? Did you face any challenges?
I’m quite a long time in the music business and it was time to reflect my career so far. Being a DJ means being producer, label operator, promoter, manager, A & R, social media expert, photographer or even travel agent and you have to be interested in social networks and other media. This whole peculiarity about the business and the self-staging is not me at all. These opposites prompted me to process the different roles and identities musically. The result is a consistently heterogeneous, diverse, broadly diversified sound ranging from techno to tech-house to lush vocal tracks and is still homogeneous, as is my identity. The album is like my personal kit of all these sounds.
I started to produce ‘Identity Kit’ more than 2 years ago. I searched for sounds and new partners...I started to produce ‘Identity Kit’ more than 2 years ago. I searched for sounds and new partners. I found the opera singer Adam Schilling with whom I recorded ‘Comfort Zone’. I produced ‘Tenacity’ with the very talented Distale.
Like on my first album 'Hitting Home’ I arranged some tracks with Ronald Christoph and Asem Shama and of course I have recorded two songs with the charming Elif Biçer and a song with the Italian Disco Queen Hard Ton.
What’s been inspiring you lately?
As I mentioned before I get inspiration from my gigs and other DJ´s like Andre Galluzzi or Sven Väth. But also Elif Biçer is such a lovely person which inspires me every second!
Any highlights from your time DJing recently?
Recently I had great nights at Hive in Zürich, at the Traumsafari Festival near Nuremberg and at MEMBERS with Monika Kruse. Especially MEMBERS was outstanding. There was a huge line for 6 hours and we could not offer entrance anymore because it was full from 1 am. Monika played an amazing 4 hours set and people got crazy. I made a 4 hrs warm-up set and a 5 hrs closing set. That was fun!
In the beginning of 2017 we are planning a tour in selected clubs and cities...Can you name a particular track you really admire and that has been making regular appearances in your DJ sets?
I´m a big fan of Mr G. I think I have a lot of his releases in my bag every time. Especially his last vinyl on 2x12” for the Recordstore Day 2016 with Vinalog and Relative. I think it´s called ‘I need your Love’ and it’s so catchy and rocks every floor!
Finally, what up coming plans do you have for Paso, gigs and your own music?
Paso 050 is coming up next year, which marks another milestone in the label biography. But I cannot reveal anything more. In addition, with Marcus Springer from Deejay.de, I created the vinyl only label Beech Music, on which the fourth release 2017 is due to be released. For my party MEMBERS, there are still a few DJ´s I would like to invite as a guest DJ. In the beginning of 2017 we are planning a tour in selected clubs and cities.
