Luca Donzelli & Mar-T are an ever growing force who once again bring us a killer EP on the Do Not Sleep imprint, whose A&R department is headed up the the main man Darius Syrossian. Hailing from different places around the world, Florence and Ibiza respectively, the duo created something special so we wanted to jump in deeper and see what exactly went into the release as we caught up with them recently for a quick chat.
Florence is a little bit less crazy than Ibiza, but more art than a lot of places in the world... You’re from Florence and Mar-T is from Ibiza. How has the city you live in influenced you and your musical tastes?
Luca: Florence is a little bit less crazy than Ibiza, but more art than a lot of places in the world. I can say that I'm trying to put my "art" into the tracks, trying to do something that can be considered timeless.
I don’t want to make tracks just for the period or just for what is number one now. If I have a trance or tribal idea, I just do it, but still try to find the right atmosphere for now. We are 100% complementary to one another, art and craziness together! Such a bomb combo!
We met in 2012 at Sonar in Barcelona. But everything had started the previous year...When did you first start making music/DJing? How did you two meet?
Luca: I started making music in 2009; it began with me playing music, not creating music. Producing my own music was just an idea that came when I needed something new from what I was playing out.
We met in 2012 at Sonar in Barcelona. But everything had started the previous year. Marco Carola dropped two unreleased tracks by me, at Amnesia Closing in 2011. These tracks had great feedback and Mar-T loved them as well, so months later, I received an email from his label Wow! asking me to send over some material. So I sent "Burn That Gasoline" and he loved it and invited me to Sonar to play for the Wow! Showcase.
What was the creative process like in the studio for this release? Do you have a tried and tested formula?
Luca: No absolutely not, everything comes in different ways every time; we start to produce in a lot of different ways, because everything depends on what we have in our head at the time. It could be an idea, a melody, a rhythm or for example something that we sang alone in the club and recorded with the phone during a party. We are making music, so to make something emotional; we have to start from a sentimental place.
We are making music, so to make something emotional; we have to start from a sentimental place...How did you end up signing the record to Do Not Sleep?
Luca: Darius Syrossian had an interest in our music and was playing our tracks so everything was quite simple: just make the right music for Darius, and the release will come very quickly after that!
How did the Emanuel Satie remix come about?
Mar-T: We are big fans of Emanuel and love his music! He's incredible with his tracks, making something different every time, creating high quality emotion, so we were super happy to choose him.
We have a lot of moments in our head for sure, especially for Luca, as it was his first season...You’ve just returned from 6 months in Ibiza: How was it? Any particular moment that stands out for you?
Mar-T: We have a lot of moments in our head for sure, especially for Luca, as it was his first season. Moments in the club, together on the dancefloor (we both like to party) and of course when we played together in the main room at Amnesia for Hyte and Do Not Sleep at Space. A really bomb summer!
Do you have anything else in the pipeline?
Mar-T: We’re preparing many things in the studio, experimenting a bit with new sounds and new rhythms, but focused towards the dancefloor. The same thing for Mar-T's label Wow! where Luca is the A&R. We both want to release things that we can play. So for now we’re preparing a lot of new things, and working a little bit more on the label and manage the last few months of Wow!’s ten-year anniversary!
