The seemingly unlikely pairing of International Feel boss Mark Barrott with Gerd Janson and his Tuff City kids compadré Philip Lauer in 2014 resulted in one of the best singles of that year with ‘Balanzat’ when these three individuals got together to form a sort of Ibizan-Germanic super-group in Talamanca System.
Coming on like the best track from 1989 you’ve never heard, the record was a love letter to those care fee euphoric house days with a modern production sheen yet without the pastiche. Now back with a full length album; those heady late eighties house music themes return over nine shimmering, melody soaked tracks.
Strangely, recent excellent single ‘My Past Is Your Future’ is not present and sadly there are no stand out moments in the shape of ‘Balanzat’, but opener ‘Transatlantique’ offers up the classic piano chords you’d expect while ‘104’ goes for an Italo feel and ‘Ocean Grill’ channels Warp-era ravey warehouse breaks.
Things get blissed out during a beautiful chord sequence on the beat-less ‘Distant Shore’ before ‘Conga Cage’ breaks form for a wigged out afro-beat jam and then we’re back into floaty ambient territory on album closer ‘Aurorca’.
If you’re in need of an album to cover the club, the car or the beach this summer you need look no further.
