To celebrate Radio1 week in Ibiza, we pick our top five mixes from the Beeb’s long list of recordings and broadcasts from the island.

Nicky Holloway - Manumission at Ku, 2 July 1995

The first ever Essential Mix recorded in Ibiza at the club that is these days better known as Privilege. Nicky Holloway, once tagged as the prototype of the superstar DJ, was one of the original “Ibiza Four” DJs along with Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold and Trevor Fung. Unlike today’s Essential Mixes, where the crowd noise is recorded using special microphones, this was recorded straight out of the mixer and the crowd noise was picked up by the turntable needles.

Pete Tong and Sasha - Amnesia, 27 July 1996

The first fully live Ibiza Essential Mix. Tongy and Sasha, at the peak of their powers in the early days of ‘Superstar DJ’ mania, lay down  the ‘pumping house’ blueprint that went onto soundtrack Ibiza in the 1990s.

Carl Cox - Space Terrace, 8 September 1998

The master of Space captured in all his glory during the heyday of the infamous and original open air Space Terrace. This captures the three deck master in full maestro form, pulling off a list of tricks and blending house and techno to full effect. If the blaring horns and crowd noise on this don’t get your blood pumping, nothing will.

Underworld live - Privilege, Ibiza  8 August 2010

Easily the best live performance from Radio 1’s annual Ibiza jaunt. Fast forward to the classics for the best bits from this epic set. Chances of goosebumps for Born Slippy at the end? Very high!

Tanya Vulcano and Loco Dice - Circoloco  21 August 2005

Minimal house and techno swept the island in 2004 and 2005 and this Essential Mix was a moment in time for one of the decade’s biggest musical trends. At the time of recording, Loco Dice was just rising the ranks of DC10 Djs and long time resident Tanya Vulcano was the club’s homegrown and best loved star. From the first bars of Traffic Signs ‘Infiltrate,’ this was destined to be a classic.

Laurent Garnier - Space, 14 August 2005

Recorded during a monster twelve hour Radio 1 Ibiza party, this captures Garnier casually weaving through house and techno anthems and blowing Space to smithereens. Few DJs marry mainstream dance music and the underground quite like the veteran French star and this mix illustrates why.

Frankie Knuckles - Pacha 17 September 2000

US house ruled the island’s slinkier floors at the turn of the Millenium. Pacha was the epicentre for lovers of dressed up debauchery and one of the godfathers of house delivered a signature mix for the genre in this Radio 1 in Ibiza instalment.
