My Ibiza: Richy Ahmed on warship afterparties and the moment his life changed at Space

From afterparties on warships with Naomi Campbell to going to Space five times in his first week on the island, it’s safe to say Richy Ahmed’s had a good time in Ibiza

The moment the penny dropped:

It all completely changed for me when me and my lads finally ventured to the White Isle in 2001. I wasn’t really into electronic music back then so this was my big introduction. There was a group of 15 of us, all from South Shields staying in an apartment at the back of San Antonio. We had always loved partying so we made a point of visiting every single club on the island. The moment I first stepped into Space I knew I was hooked. Coming from South Shields and having only visited the small local clubs, it was completely new to me and everything about it was incredible. The size of it, the sound quality, everyone really going crazy for the music - it is definitely a moment I will never forget. I think we ended up going to Space four times that week as we couldn’t get enough.

The record I most associate with the island:

I first heard Joe Smooth ‘Promised Land’ on the Terrace at Space for Manumission Carry On during my first trip to the island. The DJ dropped it near the end of the night and the place went insane. It happened to be the fifth time I'd been in Space that week and I was blown away. It was a big Balearic classic and it was a moment I will never forget.

My own private hideaway:

I don’t really do much relaxing whilst on the island, but when I do I would definitely run away up North. I really like staying in Cala Gracia. It’s away from everything and you really get to explore nature.

Most dramatic Ibiza moment:

It would probably have to be when I broke my leg. It was at a Circoloco after party and I went to pick up my headphones and just kinda fell and twisted my ankle. I continued playing for three hours and it wasn’t until I woke up the next morning that I had realised it was broken! It was about a week before my first ever Four Thirty Two night in Ibiza at Vista Club but that definitely didn’t stop me from having the time of my life!

Most life affirming Ibiza DJ experience:

The first ever Paradise party. I first met Jamie in 2004 so we had been friends for a good few years before Paradise really took off and there hasn’t ever been an atmosphere that has matched playing the first ever party. All of our closest mates were there and it was a proper family feel, the first I had ever experienced on the island, and everyone was on such a high. It was just so crazy to see it all come to life and have our own party.

The restaurant I can't get enough of:

I’m a creature of habit so I always tend to go to the Fish Shack for fresh fish. I always think I want something new but always go back for the same thing.

The afterparty I'll never forget:

It would have to be one after Paradise a few years ago. It was on a warship just outside of Es Vedrà and went on for around 18 hours. It was mental - it had a pool, wicked sound systems and its own bedrooms. We nearly had to close it down due to not having enough money for fuel but Naomi Campbell made an appearance and ended up splitting the money between six or seven of us. Myself, Jamie Jones, wAFF and Luca C all played. At one surreal point, Jamie was approaching the ship on a speedboat as I was playing at sunset. It was all really bizarre.

Richy Ahmed plays Paradise on August 23 and 30
