For many people, the music from video games is like an audio memory book for childhood. The early days of this area of music make up a mysterious vortex of sounds originating from Japan and Hyperdub are helping shed a light on its composers and lost classics with a compilation dedicated to the era in November.

‘Diggin in the Carts’ will be released on vinyl and digitally and follows in the wake of a 2014 documentary series of the same name by the Redbull Music Academy that pointed a spotlight on the composers behind the early video game music industry. The compilation was curated by Hyperdub label boss Kode9 and Tokyo-based music historian and DJ Nick Dwyer and a tour will follow with music by Japanese vide game composers Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima with visuals by animator Kōji Morimoto.

Listen to Soshi Hosoi’s Mister Diviner (The Majhong Touhaiden) from the collection in this stream:

Diggin In The Carts is out Hyerpdub on 17 November.
